SIR JULIUS VOGEL INTERVIEWED.
Sydney, October 27. The London representative of the Sydney Daily Telegraph sends, via Albany a report of an interview be had with Sir Julias Vogel. Tie says the work Sir Julias is engaged on is a remarkable podtical novel, and fxpreeses the opinion that the execution is as striking as the design. The work will command large attention in the literary world. With reference to the Chinese question Sir Julias said the colonies should not needlessly embarrass the Home authorities, but deal wilh the matter in a straightforward manner, and let the Colonial Office look after its own interests. This question is one for the colonies to settle, and if they will not look after their own interest they cannot expect England to do so. If the Mother Country chooses to facilitate the work, well and good, btjt if not, then the colonies must take the necessary action themselves, unaided. Sir Julias added that the Australians must refuse Chinese immigration any longer. Referring to the Australiap Naval Defence Bill, Sir Julios Vogel considered that it was not objectionable when looked upon in the light of a business transaction, whereby the colonies were to get warships cheaply, but it would be dangerous for the colonies to assume.the. appearance of pontributing to maintain the Imperial Navy, The gentlement receiving the' appointments as colonial Governors should be experienced and intellectual, With regard to ithe Anglo*Australian connection be thought it wps to be strengthenediohly by the colopies being induced to regard the Imperial authorities as friends,-not rulers, fir Julius is unfavourable to the construction of a cable from Vancouver to the jOojonies, when a much shorter route , could be obtained from a point south of San Francisco. To talk of carrying a line through British territory splely was absurd, and would offer special inducement for a hostile power to, cut It in time of. war. He doubts, whether capitalists could be. found to carry out . the project, and believes bis own scheme would recommend itself in preference. The report credits Sir Julias Vogel with having under way a huge financial scheme for purchasing the present cable to Australia and constructing one from America,
