AUSTRALASIAN STATISTICS.

Mr Hayter, the Yictorian Government statist, has issued his preliminary tables of the statistics of Australasia. He estimates the total population of Australasia on December 31st at 3,551,751. New South "Wales has 1,042,919, Victria has 1,036.119, Queensland 366,910, South Australia 317,466, Western Australia 42,488, Tasmania 142,478, and New Zealand 603,361. The Maoris are not included in the population of New Zealand. The total public revenue of all Australasia is £24,799,576; JNew South Wales heading the list with £8,582,811, of which £2,664,548 was raised by taxation. Victoria comes next with £6,738,826, of which £2,739,635 was raised from taxation. New Zealand is third with £3,463,495, of which £1,876,235 was raised from taxation. The total proportion raised by taxation in all Australasia was £9,832,313. The revenue per head of population is highest in Western Australia, where it is £9 Is 3d, the other colonies coming in the following order: Queensland, New South Wales, "Victoria, South Australia, New Zealand (£5 16s 2d), and Tasmania. The taxation per head was highest in Western Australia; New Zealand, with £3 2s lid, being) third; and Victoria, £2 14s 7d, fourth. The total expenditure of all Australasia was £26,234,341, of which N.S. Wales had £9,098,460, Victoria £6,561,251, and New Zealand £3,954,290. The total public debt of all Australasia was £160,227,689, of which New South Wales showed £40,995,350, Victoria £33,127,382 and New Zealand £38,225,537 (against which, however, there is an accrued sinking fund of about three and a quarter, millions). The total imports of all Australasia were £57,254,968, of which Mew South Wales had £18,806,236, Victoria £19,022,151, and New Zealand £6,245,515, The total exports of all Australasia were £50,552,982, of which New South Wales had £18,596,917, Victoria £11,351,145, and New Zealand £6,866,169. The total miles of railway open in all Australasia were 9545, in the course of construction 1937, of which New South Wales had 2881 and 132 respectively, Victoria 1949 and 432 respectively, and New Zealand 1841 and 163 respectively. The total miles of telegraph open in all Australasia were 38,104, of which 4646 were in New The total land under cultivation in ail Australasia was 8,626,567 acres, New South Wales having 1,048,305 acres, Victoria 2,576,405 acres, and New Zealand 1,440,055. The total yield of wheat for Australasia was 47,588,661 bushels, South Australasia coming first with 19,012,500 bushels, Victoria ranking second with 13,328,765 bushels, with New Zealand a good third with 9,424,059 bushels. In oats New Zealand bears the palm with 10,512,119 bushels, out of a Mai of 15,982,012 bushels for the whole of Australasia, The total horseß in all Australasia numbered 1,439,484; cattle, 8,959,172; sheep, 97,903,922; pigs, 1,206,262. In horses New South Wales heads the list, and also in sheep, but in cattle Queensland holds the premier position. New South Wales with 46,965,152 sheep, is the only colony above New Zealand with 16,677,445, Queensland holding third place, and Victoria the fourth.
