ZEALANDIA RINK, TEMUKA.
GRAND CARNIVAL,
The last carnivsl in connection with the Zealandia Rink, Temuka, was held , on Thursday evening. It was carried out in a very creditable manner, and the new management are to be congratulated upon its success, All the arrangements were good, and every convenience waa afforded to both onlookers and skaters, In view of the fact that a proportion of thoße present were visitors from a distance, and, as no formal announcement was made of the characters represented, it is impossible to accurately describe the various handsome and fantastic dresses. Some of them were both handsome and true to detail, while in others merely vagary was displayed. The combination, however, had a very pleasing effect, and probably the onlookers had fully a fair share of the fnn. So good were some of the costumes that the incognito of the wearerß was very effectually maintained, and to those in the secret the guesses that were made as to identity were most amusing. Among the lady visitors was one representing a plantation Degrees. The costume was one of striped material, with scarlet bead gear. There was nothing particularly remarkable about it, but, the tout ensemble was so good that, its, wearer is fairly entitled to carry . off , the palm. Niggers of the conventional stage type were fairly plentiful, bat beyond the blackened face and gaudy costume effort appeared to be made to cirry out the characters represented. One athletic individual, of some six fret or more, was supposed to represent, a ;*Day and Night Nigger." He might approximately be styled a " Study in black and white," for he was half one and half the other, reminding one of the advertisement of a celebrated firm of soap* makers. Another good costome was ihat worn by a young gentleman who represented Napoleon Bonaparte, His appearance was particularly good, although the facial expression of that mighty warrior was, of course, wanting, A. stalwart youth, who would turn the scale at some 1501 b, was attired in the costume in which children of tender years figure at christenings. ;' tie was dubbed "Jinx's Baby" on the spot. Roturning to the ladies, one of the neatest costumes was that of a flower girl, or Dolly Varden, while inoiher of n|ual merit was the Highland costume of a Flora Maolvor, The military element was noticeably absent; only one iodividual appearing in the uniform of our defenders, The absence of the male element was atoned for> in this respect by the appearance of a lady in vivandie're costume. Men-of-war men, sailors, cricketers, and footballers made up a motley group, whilst the costume of a lady in jockey, rig attracted admiring" attention, The grand march, although unrehearsed, went uncommonly well, but* the most amusing sight of all was the intermingling and exchanging of colors that was to be witnessed as tha throng went merrily round the ball. • In due. jourse the skates were abandoned, and, an interval having been allowed for rest, dancing commenced, Nearly ail present at the skating carnival remained to tha dance, and appeared to enjoy themselves immensely. A nicely varied programme was arranged, and excellent music was provided by Messrs Levens and Goodwillie. Mr Winter made a capital M.C. By arrangement refreshments, were procurable. Dancing was kept up until an early hour on Friday. The evening's entertajnment was one of the best of its kind-yet provided in Temuka,
