TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

I The monthly meeting of the Temuka School Committee was held; on Tuesday evening last. Present —Messrs; J. T. M. Hay hurst (chairman), J.;Blyth, J. Winning, E. Brown, K. F. Gray, and A. R. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. , CORRESPONDENCE. ] Correspondence was received— Prom the Board of Education acknowledging the receipt of a letter from the Committee re repairs to school buildings, and intimating that an inspection would be made by the Board’s architect. From the same, acknowledging receipt of the head master’s report on the staff. / -• HEAD MASTER’S REPORT. The head master’s report was as follows: —. ~ “I have the honor to submit the, following report for. the month of. ~ September Average , roll: Boys, 188.75; girls, 154; total, 342.75. . Average attendance: Boys, 155.4; girls, 182.3; total, 287.7. Highest attendance: Boys, 165; girls, 142; total, 307. We will require 1 ream of foolscap and £ ream blotting paper. —l am, etc., ‘‘W. Bet abb.” The report covered a list of pupils who had attended less than half time. In connection with the amount of stationery, particularly of foolscap, used at the school some discussion took place, the chairman being of opinion that the present amount expended in that way ought to be curtailed. It was suggested that probably the extra amount now -applied for was in view of the approaching examination. Ultimately it was decided to procure the same. secretary’s resignation. _ w The secretary gave written noticed of his resignation owing to his being about to leave the district. The chairman stated that the resignation had been received by him on the sth, and he would have arranged to invite applications for the position only that in consultation with several of the members he found that they were of opinion that the Committee /were no longer justified in giving the* present salary of £lO.

The members generally were of opinion that the salary was none too much. It was purely a matter of making both ends meet. Ultimately Mr Brown moved, and Mr Blyth seconded secretary’s resignation be accepted with regret, and that the chairman be asked to invite applications for the vacant situation, the salary to be £6 per annum. Appliot'ons to be in by Friday, the 26th, and considered, if posible, that d»y.” In proposing the motion both the never and seconder regretted that the funds did not allow of a better salary being offered. The motion was carried. ATTENDANCE. The best means of obtaining more regular attendance occupied the attention of the Committee for some time; Previous reports on the same subject were referred to and it was found that some of the parents on the list submitted that evening had been *’ notified that their children would require to attend school more regularly, ' Ultimately the Committee resolved to summons three of the number to appear at Court, the remainder on the : list to be served with the ordinary attendance summons, visitor’s report, etc. Mr James 'Winning reported that he had visited the school and found everything in satisfactory erder. Mr A. M. Clark was appointed visitor for the month. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £4l9s 6d were passed for payment. puzEimo. The advisability of arranging for an entertainment in aid of the prize fund was discussed. It was suggested that the chairman should see the head master en the subject; with the view of the concert ; being arranged for by the staff. The meeting then terminated.
