! Melbourne, October 19. Butler, Deputy Registrar of Mines, was arrested in connection with stamp frauds. So far as is known the amount is £26,000. ■ ,-?*-„.,. George Syme, who shot his mother-in-law, Mrs Clifford, during a quarrel at Lilydale, has been sentenced to death. Stdnet, October 19. The Hon, Wm. Clarke, Minister of Justice, denies that he gave the prisoner Holt any hope of his sentence _ being commuted, and in this denial he is sap* ported by a statement of the gaoler. , A murder it reported to have been committed near the town of Gundagai, where the decapitated body of a man was discovered in the Marrumbidgee River. The body has not been identified.

The trial of the nine shearers who were arrested for having taken part in tbe riots in the Wagga Wagga district took place to-day, when the whole of them were found guilty, and Qis Honor passed sentences ranging from one to three years. The cable between Fort Darwin and Banjoewangi has again been interrupted. The wires failed at 7.30 this morning (Singapore time) and the break ia said to be sixty miles from Banjoewangi. Newcastle, October 20. Sailed—Waihora, for Wellington. Beisbanb, October 20. Sailed—Closeburn, for Timaru. A curious interview has taken place between Sir Tbos. Moll wraith, Premier, and Lady Mnsgraye, Tbe latter assured tbe Premier that Sir Anthony Mosgrave had entertained no ill-feeling against him, and her landship refuted the charges of parsimony which had so often been levelled at the late Governor! She produced books of Sir Anthony’s I which showed that his expenses exceeded bis salary by £3OOO, the deficiency,' being met by her private purse.
