The solicitor employed by Holt, the ex-manager of the Bank of New Zealand, has published correspondence showing that Mr Clarke, Minister of Justice, promised that Holt should be released from gaol if sixty members of the Opposition in Parliament signed a petition to the Minister praying that Holt be released. This was done, and Fir Henry Parkes, the Premier, endorsed the promise made by the Minister of Justice, but subsequently withdrew his consent to tbe course proposed. Holt’s solicitor, in a letter scompanying the publicutho of this correspondence, accuses tbe Government
of torturing Holt by holding out false hopes that his term of imprisonment would be dommuted. A fisherman cruising in the neighbourhood of the Keppel Islands has Idiscovered the missing ship Easirainster, whijh left Maryborough for Newcastle on 17th February last. The vessel was found a long way inside a coral reef, and the hull appeared to b* intact. There was evidence that the survivors of the wreck had been on the reef, and writing was discovered on portions of the wreck, but the fisherman could not read it. Perth, October 17. A most n markable petition has just been presented to Parliameni by the proprietors of the Western Australian newspaper against Chief Justice Onslow. They allege that for the last five years they have been plundered, perS'CUted, insulted, and assailed in the basest manner, both by the public speakers and by other journals, and they cannot obtain any redress owing to the animosity disp'ayed towards them by the Chief Judge.
