MR WESTGARTH IN MELBOURNE.
At a dinner given by Mr Henty> the oldest settler in Victoria, At the Exhibition recently, Mr Westgarth, of London, was a guest, and his health was drunk. In reply to the toast, he spoke of his tour through the colonies, and said—“ The marvellous progress which I have seen since 1 landed here two months ago has made my trip one succession of delights and surprises, I have visited New South Wales. I find that the old scenes of my time and recollection are almost as"completely changed in Sydney as in Melbourne itself. Then I passed to Queensland, feeling as much astonished with the progress and prosoects there as anywhere else. Next I crossed to New Zealand. What ata Ito say of that colony ? Magnificent alike in country and climate. I was fast coining to the conclusion that it was the very garden and paradise of the nvrtb. There have been bad times in New Zealand. My decided impression ae I travelled through the country was that New Zealand had seen the worst.”
