CHKIST-MIUKOn O-JRN EXCHANGE The Corn Exchange reports for ihe week ending Friday evening, the 4<tb inst. Transactions in wheat during the week have been on a moderate scale, no special inquiry for lines of any magnitude being noted, although prices are firmly maintained on the basis of last week’s quotations. This, no doubt, is the result < f stocks becoming more attenuated. Oats remain firm, and several large parcels have changed hands at satisfactory rates to holders. Other lines of produce are unmarked by anything of a decided character, and our quotations, as under, may be taken as a fair average of values. Wheat —Prime tuacaii, 3s 6|d to 3s 7d; pearl and hunters, 3s 5d to 3s 6*d; chicken wheat, whole, 3s; broken, to 2s 9d. Oats— Milling, 2s 3d; short feed, 2s to 2s 1 ; tartars and inferior, Is 8d to Is lOd, Barley— Malting, 4s to 4s 4d; seed parcels, 4s 3d to 4s Gd. Beans and Peap—The former 2s 9d to 2s lOd, and the latter 2s Gd, with inquiries for true samples for seed at 2jj j Q-rass fteed—Cocksfoot is in moderate request for sowing, 3*d to 3f|d being about the tip prior for machine d. esstd; farmers jaieols, 2|d to 3d. Ryegrass is quiet at 2s 91 to 8s 3d for machine dressed, and Is 9d to 2s 3d for farmers’ lots. Po'afoes—A fair demand has been experienced for second quality at 47s Gd to 50s at country stations, sacks extra. Dairy Produce —Butter at present is unquotable, buyers not feeling disposed to risk much so early in the IWison. Cheese, firm, at B£d to 4d. The above prices are those paid to farmers for delivery, f 0.b., sacks extra. CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the .Addington yards on Wednesday largo entries of all descriptions of stock yarded. Fat Cattle—A full market, quality varied, prine and medium iu about equal proportions. Demand hardly able to Cepe with the large supply, and values were easier and withdrawal-* were numerous. Prime bullocks sold at from £6 10s to £7 ins per heat; medium weights, £5 to £5 17s Gd. Heifers and fat cows sold at from £4 to £6 15a, being at the rate of from 16s to 20s per lOOlb, according as the quality varied. Store Cattle —’Ihree-year-old steers from £4 to £4 15s; heifers, same age, £3 5s to £3 15s; two-year-old steers, £2 10s to £3 5- ; yearlings, 20s to 255; store cows, £2 to £S 15s. Dairy Cattle —Demand dull, and values easier.
Fat Sheep—A fall market, quality varied. For the best quality sheep the market was firm at fully late rates; second rate quality, however, was weaker, and values easier. Primest crossbred wethers and maiden ewes sold at from 15s 6d to 18s 9d per head, lighter weights 12s to 14s, Merino wethers were in large supply, and a considerable drop in values took place, values ranging at from 10s to 13s per head. Mutton ranged at from 2£d to about 3d per lb, according to quality. Store Sheep—A good inquiry was ruling, hoggets selling at from 8$ to 12s 7d per head ; ewes with lambs at from 12s to 15s per couple. Fat Lambs A fairly numerous entry. The best pens brought from 10s 6d to as high as 13a 9d each; medium, 7s to 8a 6d.
Pigs—A small entry; values unaltered, good porkers being worth fully B£d per lb. DUSEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is.the report for the week ending Wednesday : Wheat—Values remain much the same as last week. Millers are open to buy choice Tuscan and other special' mixing qualities. Medium milling is difficult to sell, aud commands only a little more than fowl feed prices. Whole fowl wheat is scarce, and firm in value at quotations, which are: —Prime Tuscan, 3s 8d to 3s lid for extra; other sorts in prime condition, 3s 7d to 3s 9J; medium mdlingr, 3s 2d to 3s sd; frosted and feeding lines, 2s Id to 3s Id. Tuscan, ex Enterprise from INapier, at 3s 8d bn wharf. Oats— supplies are coming in from the country a little brisker. Prime milling, 2s to 2s 2d ; prime feed, 2s to 2.“ to ; inferior, Is 9d to Is lid. Bariev —Some lines have gone off for seed, but otherwise there is little demand. Extra fine for seed, 4s 6d tot4s 9d; malting, 3s 6d to 4s 3d; milling, 2s 9u to 3s 2d; feed, dull, Is 9d to 2s 6d. Ryegrass Seed —Poverty Bay grown 3s 9d to 6a; local grown—machine dressed, 2s 4d to 3s; undressed, 2s to 2s-9d. Selected cocksfoot, 4d to 4|d. Potatoes —Prime Oamaru, 60s to 70s ex truck; do Canterbury, 60s to 65s ex store; do Southern, 50s to 1 55s ex store. Kidneys and other white sorts do not meet with any, sale. Chaff—Prime well-colored oaten, 60s to 67s 6d ; do do medium, 50s to 555; inferior and straw, 30s. to 455. In all cases bags are returnable to the grower. Dairv Produce—There are several inqnirii» -f-r pitted holier, prime quality, for the Austmnau and 1
Engli h markets, but it is too early tor supplies to any extent. Prices range from 9d to lid. Medium down to inferior are not in request, and difficult to place at any price. A Dunedin firm (says the Taieri Advocate) has contracted with the Henley Dairy Factory Company for tho supply of 20001 b of butter per month for 12 months from October I, in 71b tins, at Is Id per lb net cash, delivered in Dunedin. The same firm also offers this factory company Is per lb for any surplus butter they may have after delivery of the foregoing 20001 b per month. Sheepskins On Monday, dry crossbreds sold at 2s 6d to 5s Id, or equal to 4|d to 6|d per lb; dry merinos sold at Is 9d to 4s 7d, or equal to 4|d to 6£d per lb ; dry hoggets and mixed, Is 3d to 2s 6d, or r (qual to 5d to Gd per lb; green crossbreds sold at 8s 9d to 5s 7d; green merinos sold at 3s to 4s 9d; giecn lambskins sold at 8-1 to 9d each. Hides—Heavy picked parcels of ox carefully taken off, 3d to 3|d; mi dium do, 2£d to 2|d ; light and inferior do, 2d to 2fd; bulls, cut, slippy, and otherwise damaged, Id to l£d; green ox hidi s, 11s to 18s; green cow do, 6s to 15s. Tallow Prime rendered mutton, £lB 10s to £2l per ton ; mixed do, £l6 10s to £l7 per ton; inferior rendered, £l4 to £l6 5s per ton; rough mutton fat, 12s to 13s 6d per cwt; rough mixed do, 9s to lls per cwt. ] USEDIN sTO(K MARKET. ______ I At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday tho following business was transacted : Fat Cattle—223 yarded, very nearly all prime beef. The sales throughout were among the worst ever held at Burnside at this season of the year, prices throughout being very unsatis factory to growers and other vendors, as they were 15s to 30s a head bolew those ruling at last week’s sale, one draft of 20 head going back to the paddock unsold. Bullocks sold at £5 7s Gd to £8 10s, a couple of pens extra heavy to £9 15s; cows, £4 to to £G 15s.—Donald Reid and Co. sold for Mr James Guild (Trevenna), 12 prime bullocks at £8 7s Gd ; for Mr J. M. Greei.away (Bulmer), 6 prime hull- cks at £7 sj.—Donalds j . —Donald Btronach sold for Mr Guerin (Winchester), cows from £4 2s Gd to £5 12s Gd.
Fat Sheep —2318 were penned, consisting of 180 merino wethers, and 2 130 crossbreds, the greater part of which weie wethers. Freezing weights and quality sold at just about last week’s lates, but light weights and medium mutton ruled Is 6d a head lower. A special line of halfbred ewes sent in by Mr William Grant, of Eloughton Grange, Timaru, brought the highest of the season —namely, 21s 3d Crossbred ewes sold at 11s to 2ls 3d : crossbred wethers, 12s to 17s 9d ; merino wethers, 9s 6d to 12s. —Donald Reid and Co. sold for Mr William Grant (Elloughton Grange), 50 extra heavy ewes at 21s 3d. — Donald Stronach sold for Mr M. Guerin (Winchester), mixed crossbreds at 13a 9d; mixed quarter-backs and merinos at 13s 3d to 13s 6d. Fat Lambs —180 penned. There was brisk bidding for best pens, at last quotations ; others were difficult to quit at low prices; best sel 1 at 9s to 13s, others 4s to 8s 6d. Fat Pigs— 66 in, ranging from suckers to prime porkers fcfuckers, 8s to 14s; stores, 16s to 265; porkers, 23s to 40s; heavy sows, 45s to6os, AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, October 4. Maize, 8s 6d to 3s 6|d. Bran, lOd. Adelaide, October 4. Wheat, 4s 4d to 4s 3d; for shipping parcels at Port Adelaide, 4s 2d to 4s ;at outports, 4s Id. Flour, stone-made. £9 10s. Bran, Is 2d to Is 2£d. Pollard, Is Id to Is 2d. Oats, 3s 5d to 3s Gd. ENGLISH MARKETS. London, October 1. A cargo of Adelaide wheat has been sold at 41s 6d, October 2. The English wheat shows a general decline, the average price in country markets being 32s 3d. The Continental market has an upward tendency, and the American is advancing rapidly. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,252,000 quarters, and for the Continent, 700,000 quarters. The American visible supply of wheat is 31,500,000 bushels. Severe snowstorms in the north of England have caused great damage to crops. October 3. A cargo of Australian wheat has been sold at 40s 6d, and anoiher at 40s 9d. ■ . At the wool sales yesterday 11,700 bales were sold. Good sorts are firm, faulty and inferior are a trifle easier.
The market rale of interest is 4 per cent. A ustralian flour, 27s Gd to 28s. A ustralian frozen meat is dull of sale, and has experienced a slight decline.
