AUCTIONEERS' REPORT.
TIMARU. Messrß Gracie, Maclean and Adam report for the past fortnight, ending Saturday, as follows: Horses—The demand for draughts continues brisk. To-day we disposed of all the horses entered, which were suitable for farm work, and several buyers did not get their wants supplied. There is but little doing in hacks, as those coming to hand are nearly all of an inferior stamp. We quote medium to good draughts at from £l4 10s to £24; aged, £8 to £l2; light horses, medium up to £L3 10s; inferior £4 to £8 10s. Sheep—At Washdyke on the 20th inst., the entry of fat and stores was small, and but yery little improvement in numbers on the 27th. Pat sheep
were in better demand at slightly im- ' proved prices. We sold 30 fat ewes at 14a 2d, 86 fat ewea and wethers at I4s, 42 fat ewes at 13s 3d, 36 fat ewes at 13s 9d, 64 do do at 14s, 50 crossbred hoggets at 12* 6d, 162 ewes in lamb (medium) at Bs. Cattle—On the 20fch inst., a more than average entry of fat and stores met with a good demand, and with the exception of a few springers every line was cleared at improved rates. At auction and privately we sold 90 head, viz., 3 bullock* at £7 7s 6d, 2 heifers at £7 ss, 5 heifers at £6 to £6 ss, 8 cows at £4 15s to £6 2s 6d. 14 steers and heifers at £3 12s 6d to £4 7s 6d, six-quarter-olds at 35s to 40s, calves 17s to 255, and privately 20 head store cows And 22 head 2 to 3-year-old steers and heifers. Pigs —Very few coming forward. We sold 14 slips at 40s, and 3 sows at 30a. Skins—At our regular sale on the 19th, best crossbreds fetched 5s to 5s 9d; country skins (well woolled), 4s to 5s 3d; light, 2s to 3s. ENGLISH MARKETS. Londow, September 27. Sir John Lawes, a wheat expert, considers it unlikely that wheat will advance in price to any large extent. At the wool auctions to-day 21,000 bales were sold. September 28. The following are the latest frozen meat quotations:—New South Wales meat, 4f d; New Zealand meat, 5f d. Good basils are selling at advance, and ordinary quality at id. Three thousand nine hundred quarters of Adelaide wheat, October shipment, has been sold at 40s 9d. The latest quotations for wheat are—Australian, ex .warehouse, 41s to 41s 6d; off coast cargoes are steady from 38s 6d to 395; New Zealand longberried, 4ls 6d to 425. New Zealand hemp, £26 15s to £27. The present series of wool sales will close on the 12th October. At to-day's sale 12,000 ra'es were sold. The bidding was spirited, and the demand stronger. September 29. Recent failures in the Torkshire woollen trade have weakened the demand for wool, except for choice sorts, the rates for whirh remain steady, Tallow, best mutton, 27s to 27s 6d. Kauri gum, unaltered. Sugar, quiet. Hides, 4d to 4id.
