A NARROW ESCAPE.

A peculiar accident, says the Patea County Press, occurred to a daughter of Mr H. F. Mason, of Waverley, on Saturday last, whereby she nearly lost her life. So far as we can gather it seems that Miss Mason saw a clear colorless liquid on the mantelshelf, and imagining it to be water, took a drink, but, immediately finding that though colorless it was by no means tasteless, disgorged as much as possible of the mouthful, but of course swallowed some portion of it, and’at once notified her mistake. The bottle, which had been placed with the label towards the wall, contained “Gower’s Kill All” —a rather unpleasant name to greet the. eye of the unlucky imbiber of the contents ou turning the bottle round. Dr Perkins was at once telegraphed for, and was fortunate in reaching Waverley in time to save a valuable life, though not without great trouble and anxious skill, as bis patient was in the throes of st ychnine muscular contraction when arrived. He remained, however, until the system was reMeved of the strychnine and his patientwas on the fair road to recovery, and f om latest accounts Miss Mason is as we 1 ! as can be expected. It is safe to assume that strychnine preparations will in future be tolerably safe from molestation so far as Miss Mason is concerned.
