London, September 21.
Letters received from the Congo predicted the murder of Major Barttelot. Ibe latter is alleged to have treated the men nnder him in an overbearing manner, and although there was no necessity to apprehend a shortness of supplies, Ibe Major placed the party on starvation allowance, while the officials were abundantly supplied with food, even to waste. At the time the letter was despatched bis murder was expected dsilji Major Barttelot is also accused of cruelty to the men, whom b» ill-used on the slightest provocation. Her Majesty has sent a letter of condolence to Major Barttelot 1 s father. Information has been received from Central Africa that Mr Jamieson, who succeeded Major Barttelot in command of the relief party,'died from fever at Baogala on August 7tb. Major Barttelot, in a letter written before his death, expressed distrust of the chief Tippo Tib, and news now received;from;Congo confirms his treachery. The; general, opinion in Central Africa is that it will be impossible to send any fresh aid to- ■ Stanley by way cf Congo.
