COALMINERS’ STRIKE.

Sydney, September 19.

A serious riot took plaee at the New Lambton mine, Newcastle,, yesterday, A number of laborers who had been engaged to put oat coal, were rushed hy a mob of one thousand miners armed with sticks. The police attempted to protect the men, but were powerless against their numbers, and violence was only prevented by the surrender of the laborers, who undertook to refrain from doing- any more work. A force of Permanent Artillery under Colonel Spalding, with a Nordenfoldt gun, was despatched to the scene from Sydney, but the men had dispersed before its arrival.

In consequence of the miners’ riot at the Lambton mine, Newcastle, His Excellency the Governor has issued a proclamation calling upon the citizens to assist in maintaining law and order in the coal districts. The proclamation warns the miners that stringent measures will be adopted by the Government for the security of those engaged in lawful work. Colonel Roberts and two hundred of the Permanent Artillery, with Gatling and Nordenfeldt guns, left for Newcastle this evening.
