RbPAIES to Ohbistohcboh Oathedeal. —The Cathedral Chapter state that it will require £750 to restore the spire and repair the other damage done to the cathedral by the earthquake. They intend appealing to the public for subscriptions. Meeting at Bblfibld.—A meeting of the North Orari Ratepayers will take place at the Belfield schoolroom on Monday'evening next, at eight o’clock, when the report of the Committe appointed at a former meeting will be presented.

The Railway Commissiones. The Government have abandoned any attempt to get a Railway Commissioner at £2500, and have instructed the Agent-General to ascertain if a suitable man can be obtained for £3OOO. They have, however, not decided whether they would engage such a man at once, without waiting for the authority of Parliament. The Escaped lion has reached a French resident in Auckland that Gasparini is still alive, and has made good bis escape. Further information is withheld at present, bnt it is asserted that a few weeks will disclose the fact that ha is safe from danger of further molestation from the law, and that ha has roaahed another country where he will havo no fear of extradition.

Attempted Suicide, —A girl named Larris, who lives at Kensington, near Timaru, attempted to commit suicide on Monday afternoon by swallowing a quantity of csrbohc acid. Her action having been discovered, medical assistance was quiekly procured, and her life was eayed, She was taken to the Timaru Hospital, and when recovered suffioiently will be charged with the offeuee at the Resident Magistrate’s Courti

Rifles’ Social. —The last grand social gathering this year, under the auspices of the Grraldide Rifles, takes place on Thursday evening next.

Oeioket. The annual meeting of the Temuka Cricket Club takes place at the Crown Hotel, Temuka, this evening, at 8 o’clock. All interested are invited to attend.

Ball at Temuka.-—A ball will take place in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, on Friday evening next. The music will be supplied by Mr J. J, Heap, and refreshments will be provided. Peebbttbeian Chuboh.—To-morroW the Rev, W. White will conduct the morning service at Geraldine, and the afternoon service at Woodbury. The Rev. Mr Archibald will preach at Bangitata South in the morning, and at Geraldine in the evening, The hours of servioes will be found in our advertising colums. Football, The watch between the Englishmen and Canterbury was played at Christchurch on Thursday, and resulted in a win for the visitor* by 8 point* to nil.—A match took place at Temuka on Thursday nfternoon, between Darklown (Temuka), and Waihi second. The visitors were overmatched and were defeated by 9 points to nil. A Lookt Man.—Siys the Hawke’s Bay Herald "We are informed that Mr J. Mann, formerly porter at the Napier Hospital, and whose reported accession to a legacy of £130,000 was notified aom* time ago, is about to proceed to England to receive the money, ho having received notification that his presence there is requisite.” Railwat Rktubns.— The following are the railway returns for the four week* ended Sept. 18th, 1888 : Receipts : North Island, £20,564 13s lid ; Middle Island, £42,223 6s; total, £62,787 19s lid. Expenditure i North Island, £16,604 8s lOd ; Middle Island, £31,851 15a 7d ; total, £48,456 4s sd'. The receipts from the Hurunui-Bluff section were £37,375 10s 10d,the expenditure on the same section amounting to £28,731 18s 9d. Jubilee Monument. The Jubilee Monument has at last been erected in the Victoria Park, Temuka, and doubtless before long will be unveiled with the usual amount of ceremony. The monument has been erected by Mr Jones, monumental mason, Timaru. The pedestal is of Timaru Milestone, and the column of Aberdeen granite, the height being altogether about 12 feet. Accident. —We regret to learn that a very serious accident his happened to a httle g rl be onging to Mr Edgeler, of Arcwlienua. The httle girl went collecting firewood, and came across some sticks which had been set on fire by someone and were still smouldering. The little girl took these sticks into her apron, and they sot fire lo her clothing, with the result that she was very seriously burned. It is feared that the injuries she has received will result in her deith. Woek of Aet.—There is on exhibition in Mr J. Ben’s window a beautiful piece of orewel work by one of the pupils of St. Joseph’* Convent, Temuka Mi** Ann Murphy, It consists of a paradise bird with expanded plumage, and standing on a beautiful spray in full b ossom. The whole thing appears very realiltio, the coloring being splendid, and it does infinite credit to the laaifl and industry of the young lidy who has worked it. It is framed ia a very ornamental f ame, made of leither, gilded over. The leather is out into various shapes, representing laurel leaves, rose*, aad a variety of other flowers, e!e. It is altogether a very interesting piece of work. The Act of a Simpleton.— -A young man named Timothy Breen has been committed for trial :it Sydney for an attempt to bribe Sir Henry Parkes. The accused sent a letter to Sir Henry Parkes, stating be was employed as clerk by Moore and Co., of Sydney, but as the firm were giving up bus ness he wished to obtain employment as clerk in the .Lands Depart mint. He alio enclosed JLO, which he begged Sir Henry Parkes to accept, Brsen pleaded ignorance of any intention of wrong, stating that he did not think he would be able to gat an interview with Sir Henry Parkes unless he sent him some money. Breen’s late employers give him an excrllent character.

Entertainment at Temuka. —la our advertising columns will be found the programme of a grand musical and dramatic entertainment which is to be given in the Volunteer Hall on Tuesday evening next by a number of ladies and gentlemen from Timaru, the proceeds being devoted to the funds of St. Saviour’s Church, Temuka. The first part of the programme consists of a number of vocal and instrumental pieces (the vocal pieces being given in character), a laughable comedietta, “ The Steeplechase,” filling the second part. The interval will occupy half-an-hour, and during it refreshments will be provided free, Mr Haigh’s band contributing a number of selections. With such a bill of fare the hall ought 10 be filled.
