AUCTIONEERS’ REPORT.
TIMARU. Messrs Grade, Maclean and Adam report for the past fortnight, ending Saturday, as follows: Horses—There is at present a good demand for young sound draughts but, as farmers are making the use of their time ploughing and sowing, every available horse is in requisition for that purpose, hence the small entries at our yards for the last two weeks. To-day we sold medium farm horses at from £ll to £2O. Hacks; A few have changed hands at —for medium, £8 to £lO 10s; light and weedy, £3 to £6. Sheep—At Pleasant Point, on the 3rd inst., only a few pens were forward. We sold 117 wethers (medium weights) at 14s. At the Washdyke Yards the demand for fat and stores has been remarkably brisk. We sold 68 prime wethers at 15s 4d, 84 fat ewes at 14s 6d, 40 do do at 14a 3d, 30 do do at 12s, 80 do do at 14s, 118 crossbred hoggets (light) at 10s, 66 ewes (aged, in lamb) at Bs. At Win i Chester, on the 4th inst., we sold 820 crossbred hoggets at lls 4d, and, privately, during the week 290 fat wethers, 90 ewes, 1256 crossbred hoggets, and 453 prime freezers.
Cattle —At the Pleasant Point monthly sale there was a good demand for store cattle, at fair prices. We sold 7 steers at £3, 5 heifers (fat) at £4 2s 6d, 1 cow at £5 2s 6d, 2 heifers at 37s 6d, 17 yearlings at 225, dry cows (old) at 20s to 32s 6d. At Washdyke our sales were, for various owners —9 prime bullocks at £8 12s 6d, 5 bullocks at £5 7s 6d, 5 do at £7, 5 heifers at £6 10s, 4 bullocks at £6 10s, 4 he’fers at £6, 7 cow ats from £3 to £4, milkers up to £5. Sheepskins —We held our fortnightly sale on the sth inst., and catalogued 920 skins. Best crossbreds brought from 5s to 6s 7d; country skins, in proportion. Hides —We cleared our entry at—for best heavies, 3jd per lb ; medium, 2|d per lb; cut and slippy, l£d per lb; calfskins, 3|d per lb.
AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, September 14, New Zealand potatoes are quoted at 90s to 955, Circular Head 955; maize, 3s 2d. Oats are firm at 2s 5 d to 2s 6d; milling, 2s 6d to 2a 7d. Bran is easier at Is Id to Is pollard is dull at lid to Is; chick wheat, 2s lOd to 3s; butter, imported Is 8d to Is sd, local brands is 9d; cheese is firmer at 7d; New Zealand bacon, 9d to 9£d, old stock 7d to Bd. Melbourne. September 14.
Wheat, 4s sd; oats, 4s; malting barley, 6s 3d; maize, 3s lid. Bran and pollard are quiet. Adelaide, September 14.
Wheat, 4s 3d to 4s 4d, farmers’ lots 4s Id to 4s 2d at Port Adelaide, 4s at outports; stone flour, £9 10s; roller make, £lO 5s to £lO 10s; bran, Is 3d ; pollard, Is Id; oats, 3s 4d to 3s 6d.
ENGLISH MARKETS,
London, September 12. Frozen meat is steady at last quotations.
September 13. Silver has gone up, and ia now quoted at 3s 8d per oz. September 14.
One thousand bales of New Zealand hemp have been sold at an advance of from £1 to £2 10s per ton. Eleven hundred case* of kauri gum were offered at auction, three-fourths being sold at 3s, The market shows signs of recovery. The Australian leather market is unchanged. Basils are improving, and a large quantity has been sold at an advance of The new English wheat is in bad condition. The recent fine weather has had a tendency to weaken the market.
