THE CHINESE QUESTION.
Melbourne, September 12
The Government have decMed to appeal from the decision of the Supreme Court m the case of Chun Leong against the Collector of Customs.
In the LegisUtire Assembly Sir Bryan O'Loughlin supported the action taken by the Government in preventing an influx of Chinese, and said if the judges' decision was correct the whole system of the Australian Governments had broken down.
The Hon. C. Pearson, Minister for Public Instruction, in reply to the adverso criticism, said the aciion of ttie Government was real y contending for the natural existence of the colonics. Tha object Government had in view wis to prevent the country being flooded by conyicts and aliens. London, September 13.
Lord Harris, speaking at Caermarthen, said that British relations , with China and America were causing uneasiness, and although he would deploro a quarrel with America, yet every Englishman required that the British colonies shall not be downtrodden, overruled, and illtreated by their neighbors. Pekin, September 10.
It is regarded as certain that China will reject any further parleying on the Chinese-American Treaty.
