AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Arowhenua Town Board was held kit night. Present Messrs E. Lee (Chairman), Austin, Edgeler, and Story.
MINUTES. The minutes of the prerious meeting were read and confirmed.
CORRESPONDENCE.
Correspondence was received as follows :
From the Hospital and Cbaritablf Aid Department, forwarding monthly return of recipients of. charitable aid throughout the district. From the Public Works Department, acknowledging receipt of a communication from the Board re the unemployed, and stating that the Government is unable at present to start any further relief works, but that any man in distressed circumstances may, by communicating with the Engineer of the Department in Christchurch, obtain work on the deviation of the Christchurch-Hokitika road in the Bealey Yalley. ovebseek's BEjpoax. The Overseer's report was read and considered as follows : "I have the honor to. Report that - since the last meeting $f the Board the several works in progress hare 1 been proceeded with in a fairly satisfactory manner. The formation in » Alexander street has been completed and sufficient escape for the accumulated surface water has been arranged for. In Denmark street a portion has, been recrowned as specified, and is now being shingled. The balance of formation is nearly completed. One man has been employed in patching on the North Town Belt, repairs to road near: Dyson's bridge, and in altering th» creek ford. The water table in Wilkin street, near Mr Marshall's section, has been cleared, and an approach made at the west end of Princess street.' A hollow place in Rayner street, near Mr Brown's property, has also been filled up. The cutting and embankment at Mr P. Manning's has been j| made, and a portion of the creek ' widened. The work has been proved to be satisfactory, as the last fresh in the creek had no effect upon Mr Carr's sections as hitherto.—l am, etc.,
"A. W. Gaze." MISCELLANEOUS. The works at the creek ford and? Princess street as carried out was. approved of. Mr Edgeler drew attention to the damage done to the gravel rtserve gateway by one of the employees of:
the contractor for shingling. The overseer was instructed to attend to the matter. The question of granting shingle to reiidents in the Town district was discussed. It was proposed by Mr Story, and seconded by Mr Edgeler. " That seeing that the Board's supply of good shingle is limited, in future a charge of Is per yard will be made for all shingle supplied from the Board's reserves."—Carried. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting in all to £l2 7s 6d were passed for payment. The clerk was instructed to express the Board's disapprobation of an amount for a legal fee. BENTS. The Clerk was instructed to take steps for the collection of unpaid rents, and to eject tenants if necessary. VOTES OP THAHKS. Mr Bgeler moved and Mr Austin seconded—" That a very hearty Tote of thanks be accorded to the Chairman for the very able manner in which he had fulfilled the duties of his office during the past year." The motion was carried unanimously. The Chairman said that in thanking the members for their kind expression of opinion he must also express his thanks to them for their uniform courtesy and attention. He was sure that in spite of much that had been said to the contrary, no public body had the interest of their district more at heart than the Arowhenua Town Board. Mr Storey said that before parting he would like to bring under the notice of the Board the amount of work that had been done by their clerk and overseer. He had been most indefatigable in his duties, and ke thought that the Board might well grant him a small bonus. He would leave the amount to the Chairman. The Chairman said that he fully appreciated all that had been done by their clerk and overseer. He was quite in'favor of a bonus being granted, and proposed that the amount should be £5. Mr Austin seconded this. Mr Edgeler also desired to express his appreciation of the attentive manner in which the clerk had filled the duties of his office. The motion Was carried. The clerk briefly returned thanks for the Board's expression of opinion. He felt no little interest in the district, and trusted its career would be a prosperous one. The meeting then terminated.
