Winchester Fair. This fair takes place to day. Messrs J. Mundoll and Co. and Messrs Webster and Macdonald advertise entries of stock.
Geraldine Cliiokbt Club. The annual meeting of the Geraldine Cricket Club will be held this evening in the Geraldine Hotel,, A full attendance is requested. Public Meexino ax Tbmuka. -Mr T. W. Glover, the agent of the New Zealand Alliance, will address a meeting in the Temuka Volunteer Hall this evening. Mr J. Talbot will preside.
Geraldine Races. The name of Medea appeared by mistake in the list of handicaps for the All-Aged County Plate. Idalia’s weight in the Novel Race should have appeared ae 7st 71b instead of 7at 101 b.
Town Board Elections.— Ratepayers «te reminded that candidates for seats oo the Geraldine, Arowhenua, and Temuka Town Boards, must bo nominated with the respective returning officers before noon to-morrow. Mr C. E. Sherratt is the returning officer for the Geraldine Town District, and Mr W. Wills for the Teaeuka and Arowhenua Districts. Earthquake Predictions. With reference to the recent earthquakes, we may mention that Hon Rudolph Falb, the German scientist, in his list of probable earthquakes for tba year, said last November that “ the September and October dates will be the most important and dangerous.” His dates for September are the 17fch and 18th. -New Zealand Times, Zbalahdia Seating Rime, Gebaidin*. —This rink has just changed hand* and is now the properly of Mr W. G. Sherratt, Geraldine, Mr G. Kruse being retained as manager. An advertisement appearing in another column elves the hours at which the rink is open. An exciting pig hunt on skates is announced for to-morrow evening. The proprietor also intends to hold a grand carnival at an early date. In future the rink will be known as the Alhambra.
Mb Glover at Geraldine.—Mr T. W. Glover arrived in Geraldine on Friday last and delivered an address in the Good Templar Hall on Saturday evening. Owing to Mr Glover’s visit not having been advertised, very few persons were aware of the meeting being held and consequently the Hall was nearly empty. Mr Mastin occupied the chair.. Mr 31orer also conducted service at the Primitive Methodist Church on Sunday morning, and at the Presbyterian Church in the evening, delivering an address at the Good Templar Hall in the afternoon. The Wbiti Fasha. —A report so wild (saye a London correspondent) that it would not be worth mentioning wersil not firmly believed in by a minority in our midst, as fanatical and as small as the community of “ Auld Lioht Burghers,” is afloat, to the effect that the mysterious “ White Pasha,” who is reported to be marching on Khartoum, is not Mr Stanley but is D 9 other than General Gordon bimsslf, who, having escaped with some of bis black troop from Khartoum, instead of being massacred in it, as is generally believed, has raised an army among the numerous enemies of the new Mahdi in Kordofan, and is attempting the recapture of his old province. Sir Richard Barton, disbelieves to this day the very circumstantial accounts of the death of Gordon, although given ostensibly by eye witnesses.
R.M. Court, Temtjka.—-The Resident Magistrate attended the above Court yesterday, but there was all but a clean sheet. The case Tomlinson v. Nicholson was the only case sat down for bearing, bat, there being ho appearance of either party, the case was attack out. Jeremiah Moynihan applied to the Court for a rehearing of the case Angland r. Moynihan, in which an order was made at a previous sitting that the defendant pay the amount due or go to gaol for one month. When this case was on be (defendant) was in the back country working, and was unable to attend the Court, owing to the rivers being too high to cross. He was willing to pay, bnt he wanted time. Ha would pay so much per week. His Worship ordered notice to be served on the plaintiff, intimating that the application for reheariug would be considered next Court day. Meantime no warrant would be issued for the arrest of defendant. Hofe iok New Zealand. Mr F. H. Cook, a member of the well-known firm of tourists’ agents, while in Auckland, was waited on by a representative of the New Zealand Herald, and in reply to questions said “As regards New Zsaland, I have already interviewed the Hon. Mr Mitchelson in Wellington, and expect to have a mutually satisfactory agreement signed when 1 return there a fortnight hence, oa wall as arranging for an extension of our business with the Union S.S. Co. We have made our agency at Melbourne into a branch office, and shall have aaother in Sydney, while we intend establishing a branch office in New Zealand, with agencies in the chief towns; and already several hotels, coach lines, and other services—in addition to those already consented with the system—have expressed their willingness to join. The wonderful scenic beauties of Now Zealand are slowly but surely becoming known, and when we have our system m operation so that people can tell before leaving home—be that home in England, Europe, India, America or elsewhere —what their trip will cost them, and in fact have all the trouble of finding out routes, and the means of getting from one place to another, taken off their hands, arid pnly the pleasure left to them, we expect a large annua} stream of tourists td |his colony. \
