S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

■ The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was he'd on Thursday. Present—Messrs S. VV. Godlsmith (Chairman), Melville Gray, it. H. Pearpoint, J. Talbot, R. A. Buke r , and the Rev. G. Barclay. Apologies fir non-attendance were received from the Rev. T. J. Smythe, and Messrs Howell and Jackson. The question of the Validation Act, to enable the Board to deal with the Geraldine reserves, again cropped up, and, after a short discussion, the Secretary was requested to further interview Mr Richard Turnbull, 1 lie member for Timaru. In accordance with notice,* Mr Barclay moved—“ That in the now regulations, pay for pupil teachers field on after decline of average be two-thirds instead of one-half, and (hat six months under the same circumstances be alhmed instead of three months.”—This was unanimously agreed to. In accordance with notice, Mr Talbot moved—“ That the Board do not sanction the letting of residences unoccupied by teachers.”—Aftersome discussion,in which the hardship which would accrue to unmarried teachers were the motion carried was pointed out, this was withdrawn, and Mr Talbot moved—“ Tbat the Rev, Mr Barclay, Mr Gray, and the mover ba a Committee to draw up and submit to the Board regulations affecting the use of school residences not occupied by teachers.”—Seconded by Mr Barclay, and carried. Circular letters were read from the Department (1) about a new geography, which was referred for report to the Inspector; (2) respecting the stiict average, ca'liug the Board’s attention to the following words of an Order-in-Council The school shall be held to bo open any morning or afternoon if one child be present before the first half-hour of the ordinary school time has passed.” It was added that the dismissal of pupi's with the intention of avoiding the entry in the register of the ra rks that would indicate a small attendance must be regarded as a falsification of the register. —Mr Barclay said the question opened by this letter was a very important one, and ho should table a notice of motion for next Board day traversing it. In some respects the rule was quite absurd and quite unjust.—Mr Talbot concurred in Mr Barclay’s remarks. The Inspecior, Mr J, G. Gow, handed in his reports on the Gapes’ Val ey, Geraldine Flat, Hilton, Kakahu Bush, Milfor 1 , Ornri Bridge, Pleasant Point, Pleasant Valley, Rangiiata South, Raogitata Station, Eangitira Valley, St. Andrew, Scotsbnrn, Temuka, Timaru, Waitohi Fiat, Winchester, and Woodbury Schools. Tenders fer a new school at the Cave were opened ns follow;—J, R. Black, £133 ; P. McAteer, £155 18s ; T. b’oden, £145 13s ; Clinch and Lloyd, £135 ; J. Broadband, £165 9s; McKenzie and McKay, £l4B 10a; J. McOlintock, £143 15*.—Mr Barclay expressed the opinion that the site was not the most suitable, and it was decided to defer the acceptance of a tender till next meet ng, the deposits of ail the tenderers, except the lowest, to be returned. Mr Foden’s tender for repairs at St. Andrew, £26, was accepted. For class-room at Hilton the following tenders were received :T. Foden, £4l 15a (accepted); W. Young, £42 ; C inch and Lloyd, £42 13s 3d ; (Joiner and Larcombe, £45; J. McOlintock, £63 10s.

Correspondence was read from the Belfield School Committee, recommending Mr Geo. Wilmot aa master, or, as an alternative, Miss S. A. Buck. —The appointment of Miss Buck was confirmed. From the Rangitata Island Committee, recommending Mias Eva Meredith as mistress of the school.—Agreed to, subject to Miss Meredith sitting for examination at next opportunity. From the same, applying for £2, half grant of repairs to chimney. Committee to be asked to recommend a less expensive way of dealing with the matter. From the Pleasant Point Committee, asking for a grant of £l, to repair a leakage in the master’s house, the Committee on their part agreeing to btar cost of leakage repairs to the school.—Half payment to be made on a voucher, as usual.

From the Silverstream Committee, praying that repairs be made to the spouting which had been broken during the late snowstorm.—Referred back for estimate.

From the Temuka Committee, requesting ti e stoppage of a leak in the infants’ room,—Half cost to be allowed.

A grant of 30s was made to the Woodbury Committee to pay part of cost of repairs to belfry. The Geraldine. Committee requested that certain water-tanks be allowed them. —Mr Barclay to confer with the Committee with reference to the water-supply generally, and to report. From the Arundel Committee, stating their willingness to give a subsidy of £ls. —Consideration deferred for a month.

From the Beaoonsfield Committee, re advertising for a teacher.—Female (certificated) teacher to be advertised for. From the Makikihi Committee, asking for “coal scuttle, poker, chalk, compass, T square, two tin basins, and some strong towelling.” Other business not relating to this district was transacted, accounts passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
