DEATH OF A MISER.
Dunedin, September 4.
At the inquest held touching the death of John Walker the following evidence was given'William Thomson, cabinetmaker, said the deceased, for the past twelve years, was of very penurious habits, but had plenty to eat. When sick be got plenty of assistance from neighbors. He believed the deceased was eighty-one years old. For a number of years he bad been looking after the Government offices in Dunedin. Witness last saw the deceased alive on Thursday night last, on the road near tbe Botanic Gardens, and they walked up together to deceased’s gate. Constable Walker said that in searching the house, which was one room, be found City of Dunedin Waterworks bonds, five in number of £IOO each ; also two of £SO each ; Bank notes to the value of £27; gold, silver, and copper to the amount of £3 17s 4H; and an I 0 TJ for £2O, Witness also found deposit receipts in the Equitable Investment Association Company for £1496 19s 4d. Witness found no will. About two years ago witness said to Walker, “ What are you going to do with your money ? ” He replied, “ I made it from the Government, surely the Government may get it.” There were plenty of blankets in tbe house, but he had only one covering him, with two bags over. It is understood the deceased was worth nearly £4OOO.
