Mr Finlayson, who appeared for defendant, stated that he was charged for rates struck in October last, although he had ceased to occupy or .own the property for some time previotsly, and that bis client was willing to pay for the tims he was in possession. Ho had given the county clerk verbal notice of this some time since. The Magistrate gave judgment for the plaintiff, with costs, staling that the defendant should have taken the proper stepe as provided by the Act for erasing his name from the rate roll and substituting those of the parties who had become liable. It would be advisable, therefore (says the Tuapska Times), for persons disposing of property and wishing to be relieved of rates thereon, to make the proper legal application to the council, joined by that of the purchaser of the property, as the liability is clearly against the person whose same lawfully appears on the rate hook.
MASSEY REAPER AND BINDER, THE PREMIER MACHINE OF THE WORLD. Competition Challenged. LIGHTEST, YET STRONGEST MACHINE MADE. A FEW of the Reasons why the I \. MASSEY -REAPER & BINDER Triumphs over all others ; BECAUSE the frame is without joints at the corners, and so cannot ehif out of line. BECAUSE the castings are of malleable iron, and will not break, as do the iron castings on all other machines. BECAUSE the weight trip prevents repeating in tares or down grain, BECAUSE the packers go so close to the mouth of the elevator that choking is impossible. BECAUSE a third packer takes the grain down much belter than the old butter, BECAUSE it can make sheaves of any siae or all of them of the same size, BECAUSE it has a lighter draught than any other machine yet invented. BECAUSE it will take twine of any size, BECAUSE every agent will be supplied with a large stock of extras, BECAUSE it is the best machine in the world. We only ask Farmers to see the Machine on trial. Its unrivalled merits will do the rest.
