COMMERCIAL.

AUCTIONEERS’ REPORT. TIMARU. Messrs Grade, Maclean, and Adam report for the past fortnight, ending Saturday, as follows:■— entries for the last two sales have been smaller than usual, and very few really good sorts offering. To-day we had enquiries for useful farm horses, and several farmers and contractors were unable to supply their wants. Our sales are: For best draughts up to £22 10s ; medium, £l2 10a to £l7, Hacks: Only inferior sorts offering; in fact there are only a small number of good weight-carriers in the district. Our sales are nominal.

Bheep—At Waskdyko yards there has been only a small amount of business done in fat or stores during the past fortnight, but there have been a large number of transactions throughout the district in sheep for freezing, at prices very satisfactory to growers. Store sheep of all descriptions have improved in value beyond expectations, and owners who wish to or whose feed is getting short, can rely on keen competition at either of the saleyards for any class of sheep they may send forward. We sold 35 fat ewes at 12s Id, 35 do do at lls lOd, 100 do do at 12s 6d, 66 fat ewes at

lla lOd, and pnrately 100 merino wethers, and 126 ewes in lamb,

Cattle On account of butchers having; got a great part of their requirements supplied privately, there has been but little business doing in fat cattle at the yards. Sales effected are equal to 20a per lOOlbs. At auction and privately we sold 22 head at quotations. There is a better demand for stores of all kinds except old cows, which are difficult to quit at any price. We sold 20 steers and heifers at 50s, 17 steers at £3 2s 6d, 24 head 12 to 18 months old at 25s to 87s, dry cows at 20s to 355. Skins—At our regular sale on the 22nd ult., our catalogue was a light one, the wet weather at the time preventing country lots being sent forward. Best butchers’ skins realised up to 5s 6d each, country dry skins in proportion.

ENGLISH MARKETS,

London, August 30.

The leather market is quiet at 9jd to lOd. The Australian frozen meat market is dull, with slight decline. Queensland sugars are quoted at 15s. Rabbit skins show a decline of 2d to 3d.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, hare received the following cable message from London, dated August 80tb, 1888

Wheat—Owing to the heavy rains which have fallen and the still unsettled weather, the market is firmer. New Zealand average and longberned wheats are worth respectively 38s and 40s per 4961 b.
