Sale or Goods.—Mr W. 8, Maslin will submit to auction on Thursday next the balance of goods from the late Presbyterian Bizaar at Geraldine. A lot of useful and ornamental articles will be sold without the slightest reserve.

iiBSAL, —It is understood that Mr James Spence, owner of Vanguard and Chancellor, has been served with a writ for £IOOO, for malicious prosecution by Britton W. Jones, of Christ church. The case will. ,b« heard at the next Civil Session of the Supreme Court, Christchurch.

Bbbb Duty.—The beer duty collected in New Zealand during the past month amounted to £3632 4s fid, or about £630 less than the estimate. The total amount collected for the first fire months of the financial year amount e lo £18,943 lid, or £2815 11s Id less than the estimate. Cbickbx.—The third match between the Australian Eleven and All England concluded on Friday, tha Australians being defeated by one ianinjs and twenty-one runs. Romas Catholic Church, Tkmuka.— At the above Church, last Sunday, the Rev. Father Fauvel announced that on Sunday, the 14th of October, His Lordship the Bishop of the diocese will administer the Sicrameut of Confirmation in the Church. The Mahakipawa Goldfields. - Mr Larnach and others have returned to Blenheim from the Mahakipawa field. Mr Larnach is of opinion that the soil is very rich at Mahakipawa, and that the field is likely to carry a number of men. As yet there is nothing to justify any flocking over of poor men. A N.B.W. Pbhbiokbr.—Mr Alfred Stephen has for fifteen years drawn £IB2O a rear as a pension for hu services as N.S.W. Chief Justice, a total of £27,300. When in 1873 the ex-Ohief took a pathetic farewell of the Bench and Bar be stated that he had retired to make way for younger men, as be felt that Nature denied him very few remaining yean. Yet he has outlived his successor, and not a few of the lawyers who assembled to bid him farewell, and ho looks as if he bad a good many years left, although he is 86.

Should a poll be necessary in any case it will take place on the 19;h September' Customs Ritsnue. -During August the Custom* revenue collected in New Zealand amounted £136,628 4s Id, a* against £95,971 10a 8d in the preview month, and £121,106 9j 6d in August of hit year. The estimate for the month was £101,168 13s 4d, so that the amount collected exceeded it by about £32,500. The amount received for five months of tha present financial year is £557,371 11* Bd, or £36,538 9s 5d above the estimate.—The amount collected at the Port of'Timaru was £I2BB 15* 9d.

I Saltatiok Abut, Txkuxa. Captain Buick, Lieutenant Patton, and Cadet Munro, having received orders re their removal to other districts (Captain Buick and Cadet Munro going to Port Chalmers, and Lieut. Patton to Palmerston South, promoted to the rank of Captain), farewell meetings were held in the barracks at Temuka on Sunday, and were very largely attended, the building being crowded. To-night the “ final farewell meeting ” will be held, followed 1)y a coffee supper, and doubtless there will be a large attendance. Accidents. —We regret lo learn that Mr W. Wheelband met with an accident at Raincliff on Friday morning last. He was thrown from his horse and was cut rather severely about the head and face and on one of his knees. Mr and Mrs Mackay very kindly attended to him, and bandaged up his wounds, and from latest accounts wa learn that he is getting on well. At the Temuka rink yesterday afternoon, a lad named Jackson, son of Mr J. H. Jackson, broke his wrist while skating. Dr Campbell happened to be present, and at once attended to his injuries.

The Daiey Ikdustbt.—At the animal meeting of the Southland Dairy Factory delegates on Friday it was resolved to invite tenders from the three direct steamer companies, also the F. and O. and Orient Companies, for the carriage of 775 tons of Southland cheese and a quantity of butler to Ljndon next season, to be carried in chambers in which the temperature is not to exceed 80 degrees. Tenders are also to be invited for a supply of timber for cheese boxes for all the factories. A special exhibition of factory-made cheese was resolved on. General approval was expressed of a cheese of 601 b and light color as beet for export, the experience of the delegates being that the lighter the color the better the price obtained. It was resolved to petition Government to iqake a condition in the mail contract by the direct steamers for the carriage of dairy produce at reasonable rates, ,

Wkebtlino Match.—Mr Jaa. Walsh, who we stated some time ago had arranged to wrestle Mr W. Aogland, has called to say that the match was trade without his knowledge, He is, however, willing to wrest'e, but owing to his living at Albury at present be cannot find time before the beginning of the year. The match was originally arranged to come off on the 15th of the present month, but Mr Walsh wants to postpone it to the beginning of January. Timarw Hospital.— The following is s return of patients in the Timaru Hospital for the mouth of August, 1888 ;—Patients under treatment at date of last return ; Males, 21 j females, 6; total, 27. Admitted during the month: Males, 8; females, 4 ; total, 12. Totals treated : Males, 29 ; females, 10 ; total, 39. Discharged during month—Cured : Males, 9 ; females, 4 ; total, 13 ; dead : males, 1 (Robert Baxter), females 1 (Annie Greaves); totals discharged: males 10, females 5, total 15. Remaining under treatment: Males, 19 ; females, 5 ; total, 24, Outpatients treated during month; Males, 9 ; females, 19 ; total, 28. B.M. Court, Temuka.— At the above Court, yesterday, before C. A. Wray, Esq., R.M., and K Jb'. Gray, Esq,, J.P., C. Nibholson sued C. Kerr for £2 ss. The plaintiff staled the ainount was due to him. He sold a horse to the defendant for £4; defjndant paid £1 15s and the balance remained still due. Judgment by default for the amount claimed and costs. " Georg# Lnfimer appeared in answer to a summons to give up possession of a tenement. Mr Hay, who appeared for him, said if the proceedings were stayed, possession would be given up within a fortnight. Mr Aspionll agreed to have the case adjourned meantime, and it Was accordingly adjourned, G. McS, Gentlemen v. Joseph Ivess—Claim £1 17» 6d. His Worship said he had a letter from Mr Ivess stating he would arrive in Teniuka by the express train. The plaintiff said Mr Ivess had paid the sum of 9i 21 into Court, and he would accept judgment for that amount. Judgment was given for 9s 2d, and the Court rose.

The Rink,—At the Temuka Rink last Saturday evening an interesting race took place between Mr Arthur Clinch on a bicycle and Mr Tindall, the manager, on ekatee. The distance was a mile, and it resulted in a dead heat, time 1 minute 64 seconds. The speed nag certainly very good. An egg and epoon race, in which about eight persons competed, was meet amusing. Each skater took a spoon in his mouth, and representing the egg on this spoon was the whe lof a skate. It wae most amusing to see the frantic efforts of those whose egg dropped, to pick them up again. In the first heats Mr Cut ten, aid Mr Jae. Findlay, soar., won, and they then had to run off for it. The eggs which they had to carry were plaosd on the floor about six yards in front of them, and Mr Gotten, having picked up his egg at once, gained consider* ably on his opponent. Mr Eindl.y had consequently to work harder to bring up lostvround, and owing to the speed at which he Ind to go, his egg dropped again and again.
