The total expenditure under the heading of Defence, up to the present time, has been £406,000, of which £207,000 has gone for the munitions of war ordered from the old| country, and the rest in the acquisition of lands, wjges, &c. There are now liabilities to the extent of £31,000 to pay for guns and other things on the way from the old country. Five specimens of anthnony ore from Great Barrier Island are now on view in Auckland. Preacot, a wellknown prospector, discovered a reef when looking for gold in the mountains in a portion of the Island, about 700 feet under the top of the highest hill. Prescott says there are tsro reefs, each upwards of Gft in thickness. Experts pronounce the ore good, and t,litre is plenty of water close at hand, for dressing the ore for shipment.
