ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
Ihe R.M.S. Zealandia with the San Francisco Mail, arrived at Auckland on Friday last. The following is a summary of the intelligence brought by her : GENERAL SUMMARY. [Dates from Europe up to July 27th.] Mr and Mrs Gladstone celebrated their golden wedding on July 25th. Testimonials, letters, telegrams, and presents poured in by the hundred. One hundred and fifty members of Parliament presented an address. A German named Glotten was arrested on the 26th for threatening to murder Mr Gladstone, all on account of a manuscript he had sent him, and which Mr Gladstone bad mislaid. An American elm block, six inches square, was picked up off Kingston, according to a London despatch of July 26th, with this inscription: — “July 16th, 1888. The Ruby, of Dublin, bound to Quebec, was wrecked off the Irish coast, sinking with all hands.” The Daily News of July 26ih, declares Mill’s Bill, adjusting the United States tariff, more of a protective than a freetrado measure, j Mr Spurgeon, the Baptise divine, intends, it is said, to ally himself with the Presbyterians. Seven thousand colliers at Pont-y----pridd, Wales, struck for an increase of wages on July 24th. The British Government has suddenly decided to send 10,000 troops into the Black Mountains, on the north borders of India, to punish 1 Akzars for recent murder of Colonel Batley and Captain Muston. The Rev. W. 8. Green left Queenstown on July 27th to explore the glacier regions in the Selkirk range of British Columbia. The three hundredth aniversary of the destruction of the Spanish Armada was observed on the 12th July at Plymouth, and the foundation of a national monument was laid. The London Cobden Club is threatened with dissolution, owing to the faction in the Liberal Party. In view of the internal troubles, the annual festival of the Club in July was abandoned, and the Association has decided hereafter to confine its efforts to combatting protection. Sergeant Wilson, of Canada, won the London Municipal prize at Wimbledon. Many other Canadians won money prizes. Private Fulton, of the 12tb Middlesex, won the Queen’s prize, with a score of 280. !The Scotch team won the intercolonial trophy on July 16th. The Irish team won the Elcho shield, the score being—lreland, 1652 points ; England, 1642; Scotland, 1688. The Canadian team held a parting reception on July 19th, when the Princess Louise and the Marquis of Lome were present. 'ihe Committee on the subject has published its report favoring the action of closing all drinking places in Ireland on Sundays. The P«.ev Mr Waugh testified before the Poor Relief Committee of the House of Lords that thousands of children were starved or otherwise murdered in England every winter in order to obtain tho paltry amount of insurance upon their lives. He said the system of insuring children’s lives was simply offering a premium to murder.
The alleged ill-treatment of the exEmpress Victoria in Berlin was the sensation in that citj and London on July 14th. The story started by the Pall Mall Gazette is pronounced false in every particular by the St. James’ Gazette. It is said that Cardinal Moran has succeeded in convincing the Pope that it is policy to refrain from admonishing the Irish Catholics. The tenants on the Irish estates of Lord Hartington’s father forwarded the Marquis a memorial on July 16th, setting forth that an inquiry before a Parliamentary Committee would help to show whether or not the Parnell party was responsible for the murder of his brother. Lord Frederick Cavendish. There were large gatherings of Orangemen in various parts of Ulster on. July 12th. A well attended meeting was also held in Glasgow. A Papal Encyclical Letter was read in all the Catholic churches of Dublin on Friday, July 15th, expressing grief that meetings had been held in Ireland whereat dangerous opinions regarding his recent decree had been uttered. The Pope reiterated . his affection for Ireland, but the whole system of the Plan of Campaign and boycotting are condemned as unlawful. A letter written by Archbishop Walsh accompanied the Encyclical, which says the agitation referred to had now ended under the resolution of the Bishops. Father Gallaghan was released from Limerick Gaol on July 20th. Mr W. O’Brien, a fellow prisoner with Mandeville in Tullamore, addressed a public meeting in Edinburgh on July 21st. It was called to discuss Home Rule, but was changed to an indignation meeting over the death of Mr Mitmleviile, the suicide of Dr, Ridiey, and other irritating topics. The Home Rule Union intend to campaign the three kingdoms with vans full of Horae Rule literature and many speakers. Every hamlet will be visited.
An enormous Government eviction has begun at Kilrush, County Clare, on the Yandelure estates ihe p'au
includes the eviction of 114 families. Captain Crocker and the Sheriff of Clare were on the estates with a force of 500 soldiers and police. The arrears owed bj the tenants amounts to £BOOO. The Vandelure troubles began in 1874, when the late Colonel was defeated for Parliament, and never forgave his tenants for not returning him. Inspired by he raised the rents to the highest legal point. Of course the tenants rebelled, and there has been trouble ever since. Three tenants were evicted peacefully on the 20th. James Madigan, of Camicala, however, strongly barricaded his residence, and poured hot water on the evictors, who used crowbars, sledgehammers, and axes in effecting an entrance. Madigan was arrested, with twb relations who assisted him. A grand banquet wbs held in London en July 14th in honor of Canada’s coming of age. Imperial federation was the chief topic in toasting the Mother Country. Mr Dal. McCarthy said Canada above all wishes an Imperial federation. Lord Knutsford replied that while federation was sure, the proposition must come from the colonies. He was certain England would give it close attention. The Canadian Premier, Mr Mowatt, and Sir Chas. Tupper also spoke endorsing the federation project. The Standard in its comments next morning echoed Lord Khutsford’s sentiments.
Queen Victoria has refused to surrender to the German Ambassador, Count Yon Munster, the documents left by the late King Frederick, and conveyed to the Queen by her daughter, the Empress. She, however, gave Count Yon Munster permission to read them. It is alleged that a woman is at the bottom of Parnell’s “ persecution,” and that she is the main source of the Times’s information. She is known only to a few, snd it is said that the line in the Bill making witnesses who testify free from inquiry was placed there en her account, there being a suspicion that she forged the letter. The French Government has demanded an explanation from the British Government relating to the recent seizure of two French fishing vessels off the coast of Newfoundland. The Italian Chambers have defeated the proposal in the Reform Bill to grant franchise to women. The most alarming reports, both by telegraph and letter, have been received in London, up to July 18th, concerning the ravages of cholera in ' the Hluropean quarter in Hong Kong. Whole families have fallen victims. The deaths were numerous among the native population, and there is much consternation. A despatch received in London on July 24th from Manilla, says the British barque Australia, from Newcastle, New South Wales, for that port, is ashore at San Nicholas Point, and is probably a total wreck. Yon Bulow, the Russian pianist, left England in a rage on July 27th because his piano recitals were unsuccessful. He threatens never to return. The Ozarewitch will visit the German Court in the autumn after making the round of European capitals, and an official announcement of his betrothal to Princess Margaret will be made, AMERICAN SUMMARY. San Francisco, July 28, Mr Samuel IvicCaugherty, of Melbourne, was interviewed in New York on July 22nd, and gave an interesting account of the status of the wool business in the Australian colonies. He is represented as the owner of a million of sheep. The wind up of his remarks was to the effect that if the American tariff is taken off wool the Australian product will be worth 5c more per lb at once, and American wool will fall sc. Our chief source of profit, he added, is in the sale of surplus stock, for which there is always a good market. The State Department at Washington is daily expecting the news of the ratification of the Chinese treaty by the Imperial authories at ; Pekin. There are rumors, however, that China will not ratify the treaty as ; amended by the United States Senate! An offer has been made to : take a Tale College crew to. Englaqd this summer, and get up a race with Cambridge, and it is probable the offer will be accepted. Ihe 4th of J uly was celebrated in San Francisco with more than usual eclat. An interesting incident of the day was the unveiling in the Golden Gate Park of a monumental statue erected in memory of Francis Scott Key, author of ‘‘ The Star Spangled Banner,” the American national lyric. Robert W. Fladck, an Englishman* undertook, on July 4th, to go through the Niagara whirlpool rapids. On that day in a small boat, in ithe presence* of probably 10,000 people, he was drowned. As the craft entered the whirlpool it was thrown bn end, and then the mighty waters closed over it. A gain it righted itself, only to be tossed and thrown about; but the spectators were inspired with hope as the plucky fellow flew past those near, but when nearly through the worst of it be was lost. The craft floated away, but Fladck was not in it.
