PEEL FOREST.
The recent rain storm caused the highest floods known here during the past five or six years. All the streams in this neighborhood were in high flood, and the numerous fords and crossings have been scoured out and more or less damaged. Those houses which happened to be situated on low grounds were surrounded with water'for a short period, but happily no serious harm occurred. But at Mount Feel the stream which runs through the gardens was filled up with shingle, and then overflowed its hanks and deposited great quantities of shingle on either side throughout the grounds. A number of men are now employed clearing out the channel of the creek and removing the debris which settled after the flood had subsided. We are to have another school in the Eangitata district. The residents near the Bangitata traffic bridge have been for some time past strenuously endeavoring to obtain one, and the Board has at last granted their request. It is to be erected orposite the bridge cutting, and called Arundel. Whether the Board is wise in building this school is an open question, for many of the children within the boundaries of this new district are attending other schools, and some will continue to do so, while others are likely to leave the district. The Good Templars still flourish hero of course. They hold their weekly, meetings in the Scotaburn schoolroom, and now and again have a little mild excitement in the shape of “©pen meetings,” which would become very popular were they held more frequently. On Friday evening, August 21fch» there is to be a ball in the Scotaburn schoolroom, the proceeds to go to the Committee’s funds, and as the charge, two shillings apiece, is very moderate, and most efficient musicians assist, the room should be well filled.
