When it became know last night that Mr Macarthur intended to move his amendment on the motion for going i to Supply, which in effect would have been a no confidence motion, and probably would have been successful on account of the large support which was 01 pected from b( th Freetraders and Oppositionists, the Government male up their minds to burke the debate, and were successful. Tn the first instance, after consultation with the Government whip, Mr Taylor was successfully put up to catch the Speaker's eye first and so prevent the amendment being movt'd last night, und aa a preventive aganst the amendment coming on next day on the motion for going into Supply, it was determined to push through the Estimates at all h aards iunt night, Some malcontents stonewa'led to avert this, but in the end Government were successful, and by sitting till 7
o'clock this morning got through the leaf of the Estimates. ' There will now only b.j one mbr/a; opportunity to move an amendment on, the motion for going into Supply.on the, Public Works Estimates, bill Government will probably keep these till Uie last thing, Hnd a* members will not care, then; about no eorfiierics motions they,will (.robably not.<on»e on again.—Ash burton Guardian.
