S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly mveting of the Board of Education took place on Thursday. Present- -Messrs Goldsmith (Chairman), Jackson, Howell, Talbot, Pearpoint, Barker, and Rev. Jasper Smyth, Mr Goldsmith stated that since lest meeting he had sanctioned the appointment of teachers to Rangitata Island and Silverstream, the selections of the committees. The teacher at Belfisld, who had been given notice of dismissal, had written asking for a long' r notice, if the excuses he offered were not considered sufficient to enable the board to recall their notice. He had replied that the board’s decision must ba carried out. Sub-Committees were appointed to inspect and report on sites of proposed schools at Vlount Gay and Glenuvy. A deputation of residents from the Cave district attended to urge the board to push on the erection of a school at the Cave the subsidy of £65 demanded by the board having now been paid into the (■oaro’s account.—The site proposed and approved (2 acres given by the Leve s Company) is ten or twelve chains from the Cave Hotel. The architect was instructed to prepare pl»ns and specifications,and call for tenders. Mr Talbot moved and Mr Jackson seconded “ That the regulations at.present in force re employment and salaries of teachers be rescinded, and that the amended i regulations drafted by the Revision Committee be adopted in li“U thereof.— Carried. , . The following are extracts from the Inspector’s, Mr J. G. Qow’s, rrport on the pupil teachers’ examination “Ihave the honour to report the remits of the annual examination of pupil teachers which b-ean on June 26 »nd ended on June 30, 1888 " At ihe time of the • xiroination 39 pupil teachers were in the Boar i’s service, and of these five took advantage cf th : option accorded to tho*e appomted within the previous six months. One (Mmdoch j McLeod) passed the final examination a year ago and one (Annie Finn) resigned on the 30 h Juno. The number of pupil ranchers examined were thus 32. “ Sixteen candidates, not yet holding appointments, came forward for examination with the pupil teachers. “It will be seen from the tabulated stah-mant of marks obtained by the pupil teachers that 28 of them pa-sod the examination. Alexander Bdl (4th ye r), and Hugh G. Wake (3rd year) highly distinguished themselves; Maud C.rtwright (3rd year), Charles J, Goldstone (3rd year), and Robert Irwin (2nd yea>), deserve great praise for their papers ; and Maggie Gooch (4th year), Lillie Rowley (4 h year), Jessie Byers (4'h yea), and Annie Mcllroy (3rd year) are worthy of special men'ion. Three fourth year pupil teachers and one of the first ye-ir failed.

The tabulated results were as follow

The report was deemed very satisfactory, and, on the motion of Mr John Talbot, was unanimously adopted. Mr Jonathan Adams was appointed head master of the Waimate School. A letter was read from the South Orari Committee expressing their willingness to let the teacher’s residence.—Consideration deterred, notice of motion by Mr Talbot being given, which deals with this oiso. The Rangitata South Committee wrottfor a grant of £4 for repairs.— £2 was voted. Replies were received from nineteen schools to the circular re insurance. The Arundel Committee wrote '(Faring to cart school plant, ate., and give £lO 12s as a subsidy.—Application for school was agreed to, provided £ls is contributed in addition <o carting the material.
