Tatipo Te Huhue Tukioo, head chief of the Tatipo and Ngatiluwhnretoa trib'-, died at Waibi, Wellington, at tho age of 62, after a brief illness, from paralysis. Although a staunch supporter of the introduction of Christianity to these islands, he for a greater portion of his life opposed the mana of the pakehas from overspreading his native land. He took a prominent part against the Imperial troops. One of the last acts was a donation to the people of New Zealand of the sacred mountains of Tongariro and Ruapehu (whore his father is buried) ns a national park. Ha will be succeeded by bis son, Tureiti Te Huhue. The Union Company propose running the Riugavooma as a special excursion steamer during the Melbourne Exhibition season. Her route wi'l probably be Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and the Bluff, to Melbourne, returning to Wellington direct, and the fares will bo lower than those charged by the ordinary timetable steamers. The Mararoa will be the connecting steamer from New Zealand for the race week (first week in November), and during her stay of ten days in Melbourne her passengers will have tbe option of sleeping and breakfasting on 'board for a small extra charge. The Taratahi dairy factory shareholders have resolved to sell the whole concern for £7OO to those who have been supplying milk. Tho property originally cost about £2OOO. The Dahfie'd factory, on the first year’s werking, has declared a dividend of 10 percent to tho sha'eholde.rs, paid £4O investment for sinking fund, and given the milk suppliers 2|l per gallon, being a farthing more than ihey expected. It is intended to start a piggery, which the conveniences of tho company’s, property favours. ' A magisterial enquiry at Blenheim into the case of alleged arson against Long (the “ gagged and bound ” hero) was resumed on Monday. Tho evidence showed that accused was found oulside the burning bouse, very slightly tied up. No scuffl ng or noise bad been heard by the neighbours. The purchase of 40 bor 501 b of tow by accused was proved ; also the discovery of his watch and chain carefully planted, though he had sa><| the robbers took it. Goods wore also found in the Wesleyan Church grounds on the morning after the fire, though accused said they’wore all burned in the house, Constable Cooper, from Mastarton, identified him as Alexander Stnilb, a carpenter who had resided in Masterton eighteen moitbs. A further remand was grunted. At the R.M. Court, Lyttelton, on Monday, Charles Frederick Dunkley, charged wiiu using threatening at the Maori Pah, Port Lavy, was bound over in two sureties of £25 each to keep the peace towards Samuel Hadfield for six months, in default 3 months’ imprisonment. Inspector Moore and a force of police made a seizure of an illicit still and appliances at Merz : es’ Ferry, near Wyndham, Southland, on Tuesday night, and arrested Gsorge Davy and Thomas Puppenil, who were found on the premises. The house belonged to the last named man. An addition had recently been made to tbe house of two rooms. The one in which the plant was found had no windows, and the door was concealed. An exit had been provided by a ladder and a trap in the ceiling of the still room, communicating with a second apartment, which had a door. The arrangement had evidently been made to facilitate escape in case of surprise. No liquor had been made, but a fire was under the still, and b >rloy, sugar, and other ingredients were at hand for the manufacture.
