COMMERCIAL.
CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington yards on Wednesday theiv was a fair attendance. Eat Cattle—There was only an ordinary entry of fat cattle, and nothing extra prime at that, while the demand was not spirited. A line of nice little Devon heifers brought from £5 10s to £6 12s 6d, and for these there was a fair competition, but aU round the beef market was sluggish and the demand spiritless. Beef, prime, per 1001 b, about 18s 6d for the very best, down to 15s for ordinary, and even leas than that for poorer sorts. Calves—A fair entry, 30s being the top price. Store Cattle—Yearlings brought up to £l, and eighteen months to two years old brought from £llos to £2. The rest of the market were odd lots, with nothing calling for special notice. Dairy Cattle—As high as £8 5s was obtained for good animal in immediate profit, but cows a good bit off calving were slow of sale, and ordinary sorts were a drug in the market. Fat Sheep—-There was a good entry of sheep all round. As high as 245, 23s 6d, 18s 6d, and 17s 6d was obtained for prime crossbred wethers Crossbred wethers, take them at the average, were worth about 14s 6d or 15s, and mutton 2£d up to 2-Jd a lb ; ewes were worth a proportion less when assured, and merino wethers were a trifle better on the average.— Messrs Miles and Go. sold for the Orari Estate 66 crossbred wethers and ewes at 12s 6d to 14s. Lambs —Lambs brought from 8s 6d to 9s Gd. Pigs—Theve was a largo entry of pigs, with a good demand. Stores from 14s 6d to 25s ; and baconers from 35s to 48s 6d; 3fd per lb may be quoted for best pork.
DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS.
The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday Wheat—The demand all round for milling lines still continues exceedingly quiet. Tuscan of prime quality is the only sort that has met any inquiry worthy of note, and for anything suitable prices are firmer; other descriptions are dull of sale and quiet at quotations; fowls’ wheat has commanded most attention at unimproved rates. Prime tuscan, 3s to 3s 3d; prime milling velvet, red straw, etc., 3s to 3s 2d ; medium and sound milling, 2s 6d to 2s 9d; fowls’ wheat, 2s 2d to 2s 4d; seconds and damaged, Is lid to 2s 2d. Oats—Millers holding small stocks have continued to clear off all prime milling at Ja further advance. Prime, stout prime feed are also in brisk request for local consumption. Discoloured has not advanced much, and is quiet at quotations, which are: Prime milling, Is 10|d to Is lid, extra fine, 2s; prime short bright feed, Is 9d to Is lOd ; discolored feed, Is 7d to Is 8d; long tartarians, Is 9d to 2s ; danish, Is fid to Is 9d; black tartarians, Is lOd to 2s. Barley—Malting is in fair request at reduced rates, which the few holders will not accept; milling plentiful with quiet sale; feed unsaleable. Quotations, plump and bright, 4s to 4s fid; milling 3s to 3s 3d; feed, Is 9d to 2s fid. Potatoes—Good noihern are scarce and inquired for, and are now worth 65s to 70s; southern have more attention, and are realising higher prices. Ryegrass Seed—Some small lines : have gone off at about last week’s quotations, only machine-dressed is dealt in at 2s fid to 3s; farmers’ lots we quote at Is 9d to 2s fid. Cocksfoot, 3|d to 4d. Chaff—Prime oaten, 50s to 555; medium, 40s to 47s fid; inferior, 20s to 355. Pigs, up to 1801 b, 4|d. Hams and bacon : Former, 8d to 9d ; flitches and rolls, 6|d to 7d. Turnips, 15s; meal seeds, £8; black dust, 91 Btaw, oaten and wheaten, 40s, in good order from Oamaru. Hay, oaten, 60s; clover and ryegrass, fOs. Butter—Salt, scarce at 10d j fresh very plentiful. Values are lower owing to the open season. Honey, in cask, B£d per lb. Sheepskins—On Monday cenntry dry crossbreds, low to medium, brought Is 4d to 3s fid; do do merino, Is 3d to 2s lOd; medium to fullwoolled crossbreds, 8s 9d to 5s 9d ; do do meriuo, 3s 2d to 4s 8d; dry pelts, 3d to Is 2d; butchers’ green crossbreds, 4s 8d to 3a fid; do do merino, 2s 6J to 3s ; quarterbred, 3s 9d to 4s; lambskins, 2s 7d to 3s 7d. Hides—For heavy weights, free from cuts and other faults, 3£d to 3|d; medium, to 2fd ; light, 2|d to 2*d ; inferior and bulls, l£d to 2d per lb. f J allow—The regular demand for local consumption continues unabated. Prime rendered mutton, 18s to 19s; medium to good, 15s fid to 17s fid ; inferior and mixed, 13s co 14s fid. Rough fat: Inferior, 8s to 9s; medium to good, 9s fid to lls fid; clean mutton caul (fresh), 12s to I3s per cwt.
DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS. At the Burnsids Yards on Wednesday tbe following business was transacted : Fat Cattle—A reiy large supply, 26- r > penaed. The greater part were nice weights and prime quality, the
rest very medium. Best bultoeks sold at £6 to £9 15s; others, £4* to £5 17s 6d ; cows, £3 2s 6d to £7 ss. Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. sold for Mr M. Quinn (Temuka), 10 prime bullocks at from £9 5s to £6 15s, and 3 prime heifers at from £7 2s 6d to £6 2a 6d; for Mr John Murray (South Canterbury), 6 bullocks at from £8 to £7 7s 6d. Fat Sheep—A large supply, consisting of 225 prime merinos and 2947 crossbreds, the greater part of which were wethers in medium to prime order. Freezers barely commanded last week’s quotations, while in butchers’ lines a fall of is to Is 6d had to be submitted to, several lines going for finishing off. Best crossbred wethers sold at 12s to 14$ 3d, and odd pen extra 15s ; others, 9a 6d to lls 9d; merino wethers, 8s 6d; crossbred ewes, 8s 9d to 13s for prime.—Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. sold tor Mr M. Quinn (Temuka), 65 crossbred ewes at from 12s 3d to 9s 6d. Pigs—Bacon pigs (extra heavy weights), sold at from 80s to 60s; do do (ordinary weights), 43s to 555; porkers, 28s 6d to 89s; slips, 15s to 20s ; suckers, 6s 6d to 12a.
AUSTRALIAN. MARKETS. Sydney, July 25. Wheat, best milling, 3s 6d to 3s Bd. Maize, 2s 9d; second crop, 2s 6d to 2s Bd. Oats, in brisk demand; heavy feed. 2s 2d to 2s 4d; milling, 2s 8d to 2s sd; seed, 2s 3d to 2s 6d. Cape barley, 2s lOd to Bs. Bran is in brisk demand; Zealand, 9d to 9*d; pollard is also active at 9d to Butter, firm; local sorts, 2s 2d; New Zealand, Is 3d to Is 8d; second quality, 9d to Is. Local cheese, 5d to 7d; New Zealand, 5d to 7|d. New Zealand bacon, 7d to 8d; Now Zealand hams, Is. New Zealand onions, £7, Potatoes, New Zealand and Circular Head, 80s; Warrnambool 60s. Melbouenb, July 26. Wheat, 3s 4-£-d. Flour, £7; roller made, £B. Oats, 3s Id. Maize, 3s 3d. Malting barley, 5s 3d. White suga 's, £2llos. Adelaide, July 26. Wheat, shipping parcels, 3s 3d; farmers lots, 2s lid, at Port Adelaide. Flour, £7; roller-made, £7lss. Bran, B^d; pollard, Bd. Oats, 3s 4d to 8« sd.
ENGLISH MARKETS. Loudon, J uly 23. New Zealand mutton is selling at sd. July 25. An Australian wheat cargo has been sold at 34s 3d. Two Australian cargoes ot wheat hare been sold at 34s 9d. A July shipment of 8500 quarters has been sold at 355. The Antwerp wool sales opened with great animation. Prices are unchanged since closing rates of last sales.
