The Regulation of L ical Elections Bill, the Puhoi Settlers Bill, and the Wellington Asylum, Home, Hospital, and Orphana.e Reserve Bill were read a third time and passed HOUSE OF IlEf RESENf A’LTVEL On Tuesday In reply to questions, the Governrneut said that the ques ion of ascertaining the boundaries of the new electoral districts was under consideration ; that Sir Julius Vogel was not representing the New Zealand Government in England in making enquiries as to the treatment of refractory ores ; that no intimation bad been received to the effect that the duty on wool had been removed in America; that it was not proposed to deal with the Hospitals and Charitable Aid question this session, but that a Bill would be brought down next session dealing with the whole question. On the motion for going into Committee of Supply, the debate on Mr Withy’s amendment was continued by Messrs Seddon, Turnbull, Beetbam, McKenzie, and Buchanan, and it was lost by 59 to 10. The House then discussed the Estimates. On the item Education Department, Head Office, £2025, Mr Thomson moved to reduce the Secretary’s salary from £6OO to £SOO, but afterwards withdrew it, and Dr Hodgson moved to reduce it to £550. After a long discussion Dr Hodgson’s amendment was lost, and the item passed. On the item £315,025 for Public Schools, Mr Ormond moved to reduce it by £20,000. Several members, including the Minister of Education, spoke in favor of raising the school age, but the item passed without reduction on a division by 41 to 18. Mr HutchL'on moved that capitation be paid on the working average instead of the strict average, but the Premier said that would increase the cost of education by £Booo. Mr Hutchison’s amendment was lost on the voices. The item £15,550 for native schools was reduced by £lO and passed.
