' ■ WELLINGTON, July 21, The Under-Secretary of the Native Department received a telegram this morning from Mr Clendon, K.M, of Whangarei, referring to the Native outrage in that district. Mr Clendon •tates that he returned at 4 a.m. from the scene of the disturbance, having learned that two Natives of Taurau’s party were shot dead, and - one had his right arm shattered, while one of Eru Hira’s party was killed, and another dangerously wounded, a third severely, and a fourth He told Tahrau that he must desist at once, but fears that now he is roused he will not’ abstain. Manuheri, the prophet, has promised that his party shall remain quietly at their settlement unless Taurau attacks them; Mr Clendon does not think that any further collision will occur to-day, as the Natives will bury their dead, A doctor. who accompanied him to the "settlement dressed the wounds of the injured men, and tbe Inspector of Police is still in the district. . • > , ■ July 23. Taurau pro- . mised- he would do nothing if survey was not interfered with, and was told that whether it was impeded or not he must take no action under pain of being held responsible. He said he Would keep quiet unless attacked in hie pah. Two of the dead have been buried. Two men who are wounded seriously are not expected to recover. Gofecumept have take u no steps iu the matter. Probably the case will be treated as one of manslaughter* SUICIDE C? A MAORI WIFE MURDERER. Gibbobne, July 24. The party searching for the Waipu murderer, William Tueri, ou Saturday found his body in the bush, shot ' through the head. The fatal shot was evidently self-inflicted, as a piece o£ stripg was tied to bis toe and the trigger of his gun, which rested be- . tween his legs. His prayer-book was lying on the ground alongside of him. At the inquest on the body of the murdered woman on Friday a verdict of “Silful murder ” was returned ■ against William Tueri, husband of the deceased.
