On Tuesday evening a Chinaman met bis death while engaged clearing a block in a tail-race at Greenstone road, near Westbrook, West Coast. He was washed down through the race over the tip, and badly injured. He lived only a few hours after being taken io the Kumara Hospital The Mariposa left San B’rancisco with English mails of 16th ult. for Auckland on the Ist inat., one day late. The s.s. Zea’andia, with colonial mails of 18th ult., arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on the Bth inst., contract date. The Auckland City Council’s solicitors have been ordered to prosecute Messrs Hellaby for a nuisance which has been complained of at Ponsonby, The nui» sance originated near Heliaby’a slaughterhouse in the borough of Newton, but the offensive smell is spread to the Ponsonby ward of the city. At a public meeting in Aickland, presided over by the Mayor, a resolution was passed requesting the Government to place a sum of £l#,ooo on the Supplementary Estimates for the purpose of resuming “special settlements” in that district. It was held that special settlemeets solved the unemployed question.
