THE MAGDALEN ASYLUM.
i The Rev. Father Ginaly has returned home after a protracted, and, we believe, successful, canvass through the North Island for subscriptions towards the completion of the Magdalen Asylum which he has established in Christchurch, and has commenced to deluge us once more with correspondence on the subject. The newspapers of the colony are now getting pretty familiar with Father Qinaty's correspondence. He is evidently a believer in printer’s ink, and he uses it to a purpose. We have not the slighlosl hesitation in saying that ho has got more cheap advertising from the newspapers of tho colony than any other man in it, and we be'ieve the newspapers do not begrudgi it, because the work he is engaged in is a good one, and he has thrown into it energy and enterprise deserving of evey encouragement. He has now the satisfaction of seeing his labors crowned with success. On next Sunday the Magdalen Asylum will be openqd by his Lordship the Bishop of the Diocese »t 2 o’clock. The following particulars regarding the institution have been supplied to us : “Tin Sisters of the Good Shepherd have been carrying on the work of the Reformation of Penitents for nearly two years in a temporary residence, Manchester Street North, Christchurch, and they have no a’ removed to thsir new building at Mount Magda'a, which will be formally opened by His Lordship, the Rigid Rev, Dr Grimes, on Sunday, the 22nd of the pr-sent mouth, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. “ Tho object, necessity, and advantages of the institution have been dwelt on in the most encouraging manner for the promoters by all the leading journals of the colony and elsewhere. “ There are now in the institution over forty (40) penitents from Auckland to Ot >go, and from Westland to tlie P.ains of Oanteibury, and all are welcomed without distinction of creed or denomination. “ The penitents are trained to lead in. Austrians lives, and hence 'he Sisters of the Good Shepherd ask for the co jpera ion of all those who desire to see real reformation effected. “The Mount Magdala Asylum is governe i by the same rules which conirol the one hundred and fifty-six (156) Homes scut ered over ttie globs, in which at the present moment 4,00 Q Sisters of the Good Shepherd bestow their devoted care on 20,0Qp young girls and women. “ Up to the present moment the sum of over ten thousand pounds (£10,000) has been expended on the building and its n quirements and the land, apart from Hie sum necessary to support ihe penitents ot tho institution ; aod although the Rev, Father Gmaty has lately given his undivided attention to raising funds for the building of the Magdalen Asylum, still thoie rem dns a large sqm to be secured for tho first portion of the work already completed. “ Vdsi ors will have an occasion, aftep il)e opening ceremony, to visit the Institution, ’’ , ,
