A gardener at Ghristchurch was going home on Saturday with a bottle of brandy in his pocket, when he was accosted by two men, who followed him and eventually snatched the bottle of spirits, valued at 3s, out of his pocket, and ran off. He gave chase, and eventually both men were caught and taken to the lock-up. In Banco yesterday, at Chriatchurch, Mr Justice Ward upheld the decision of the Commissioner of Stamps in the case of Thomas Greenwood (deceased) that the mortgage on the property in the colony was liable to duty under the "Deceased Persons Estates Act," though at the time of the mortgagee's death both mortgagee and mortgagor were resident in England. The annual.meeting of the Auckland Branch of the Educational Institute on Saturday adopted an address to Mr O'Sullivan, late Inspector of Schools, on his retirement, and also passed a resolution thanking the Rev. E. Gulliver, late President of the Institute, and regretting his his possible removal from Auckland. Mr .Ralph Stewart was elected President for the ensuing term.
