Curious Fish. —A rather curious-looking fish (says the Press) was on view in the window of Mr Warnti's shop in Oaehel street, Cnristohurch, on Tuesday morning, and attracted a good deil of attention from the pisssrshji Mr Warne has not yet been able to aßcertaia to what class the specimen belongs, but he gave it as his opinion tint it is a species of leather j >oker. The nose is.some-.j what similar to that of a seal, and the skin is." coverediwith* shdrt f^d^r,'£the.r ( 's'aft bristles. The eyes are "very like v lhoßß of' the dogfish, and the no&ttjJs- are very plainly developed. The biily is flit 1 , and this fact, togelher with the position and shape of some of the fins, gives tbe idea that the fish did a good deal of - crawling at tho bo!torn of the sea. Then, again, the two side fins; near the head, and the tail (which is the same shape as that of a shark) : were evidently used fir swimming. The mouth is very like, and is in tbe sime position as, a shark's mouth," tltoiigh not quite s sp large. . Altogether the. fish is a very remarkable one, and can evidently live out of water for some time, for it was found on the N*w Brighton beich, apparently having been •thrown up by: a wave, and did not dio for more than two hours afterwards. Mr Wariij 1 intends to lay the., fish before, the Museum uuthonties. . 1.0.G.T. —A social gathering wis held on Monday evening la«t.in.«onnfi,ction' with the Good Templar Lodge, Geraldine. FIBE It T/iMAßrj.—iflarly on Wednesday morning Hh? waidenoe of Mr Shappere, at Waimataitai, about one and .. a half miles ito :; i the north of Timaru, was totally destroyed by fire, with all the valuable furniture and effect!. The family, consisting of Mr and Mrs Shappere, two daughters, and a son, retired, to, bad shortly after 12 o'clock, and at 2'o'olock one of the girl', Miss Ada Shappere, was awakened by her room becoming filled with smoke.
