Business Entebpbise.—Notwlthstinding the great cry about the dullness of the times there are still business men in Geraldine who apparently h«ve good faith in the ult'mate prosperity of that township. Messrs N. Dunlop and Co. have gone on enlarging their premises, and now they hare purchased the corner section between them and the Pleasant Valley road. The purchase of this piece of ground gives them the whole of tho frontage of the cqinp'ete, block, from the ft-eet past Mr Gibson's to the Pleasant Valley road. They are making great changes in the corner, which will considerably improve the appearance of the place. We congratulate them on their pluck and enterprise.

Small traps are utterly usele*s, as no'hing short of appliances for treating tjiem in the moet wholesale fashion will effect any seFSiblc diminution in the' numbers of the enemy. On« favorite means adopted is (hit of u'ing a boo l -trunk as'a'trap." The trap being baiteri w.th a ban'dfuVof fl-jlur, the lid of the trunk .-is propped open'with a'"short, piece of stick, with a stiing attached. When the enemy has gathered in B'iflicient foros the string is pulled, and the box immersed in a waterhole. One thousand and twenty-seven were thus disposed of in one haul a few days ago. Heiress-Hijj*itin(l.—The Home correspondent of the 1 Dunedin Star says Lord Buckinghamshire is such a handsome and attractive mati' that great surprise was expressed 'when' he rotumed from his heiress-hunting' trip to the Antipodes without haying .bagged the game. The "fact wa?, I believe, that the noble Eari allowed the' object of his visit to be a trifle too apparent, and that the Australian belles laughed at him. " In, vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird." However, it doesn't matter now, for the necessary dollars have been found hi Home, and the ancestral seat of the Hampdens Will not have to be brought to the hammer. ' Tne lady accompanying the money is the daughter of the Hon, Duncan"Mercer-Simpson, and a great hootch heiresii.

This manufacture isjthe outcoifte of the protection given to photograpbiiigoods in the new tariff, and it is stated wj J entail an outlay of betweeu £4OOO and From the Duncdin Star, one of the very few ultra-Freetrade papers left colony, we take the following extract, which is a proof of the ass'stance the new tariff will give lo local industries : —Two or three of the leading draper* intend to open fic'ories for the making of colored shirts. This manufacture has beeu carried on by outside labour for.sprng,tjimja.p».Bt, but since the increase in the tariff/employers propose to provide their own labour. The making of mantles, ulsters, and miil'ne r y will also off-r additional employment. A firm in town, who had carried on the manufacture of carriage springs and dashboards oh a small scale, projpj&se to extend this branch of their work.
Fined Himself.—A good story is recalled P.M., Victoria. He had*taken hia seat on the Benalla and found occasion to rebuke a solicitor for not arriving"*)',time to conduct a case when cdled on. He warned him in solemn terms that if this occurred again he would be compelled to tike some action to put a stop to such irregu'ar and annoying conduct. About a week afterwards the same lawyer was engaged to appear at the Dookie Police Court. He was there punctually' at' h'da o'clock, the hour at whicrviheCJourtiwa*supposed to be opened, but business Sib* not commence uot'l hilf'an hour later, through Mr Wyatt, P.M., not pufttrTg in an appearance until that hour. Scarcely had he taken his *»at on tl» J} -ncjli• wlieti the- 'hwyer drew hie attention to Jhe. ojpok, and at the same true reminded Mjfrh of his remark* on punc'ualily at Bjnalla Court. "Perfectly right, sir," replied the genial P.M..: "I think yon for reipinding me of it. ; Ajifred Wyitt, y.ptO«reffned 10i.l Oler.k; 't>ke a rjote of that." The Com course of tho.dehat* in the British House of Commons upon the naval defence proposals for Australia, Mj!s#brpucbere took exception to the first resolution, urging that they should not give, aw.iy tponey to the Colonies, and a Home paper thus remarks thereupon— j " As a mstW of fact'the,Bioney will not be h gift. £700,000 will be ut onoe advanced from tha Exchequer, bHt intarest will be paid on it by the Colonies at the rate of 5 per cent., and at the end of ten years the ships, whati ever tbpy are then fit for, will become the property of the Mother Country." Great Scott! What next P T«lk of high rents for land and houses, fc.lk of grubbing building societies or yoiir "uncle." CouJl unyt.h ng bi more exqais tsly obliging ? Only £350,000 o' JH<t one half of the cost of the show, demanded in the brief space of fen years, and then the landlord steps m. No wonder that Mr Childers, and for th* matter of that, every responsible statesman who spoke, accepted the resolution with something more than approval. Mr Bradlmgh g»ve his support as a Harlical to the resolution - ; which /ras oarried by 85 vofes'agairist 37. "The repairs of: the ships will, as-'explained by Lord George Hamilton, be dofmysd by the Colonists up to the sum of J 91,000, The whole thing is very funny.—Shipping Guide.

The Ashlbt Skat.—The writ for the Ashley election reached Mr G. Whitefoord, Returning Officer, on Friday evening, and tbe election will be held without delay. The local candidates already spoken of are—Messrs H. J. Horrell, West Eyreton ; J. Parlane, Oxford ; Edward Chapman, Stoke. The probable outside candidates are to be the Hon. W. Ro'leston and Mr A. Saunders. Jotenile Smokers. The Wanganui Chronicle suggents that children caught smoking should be well " spanked." Another exchange says:—"We are of opinion that the flogging should also be extended to those who Bell or supply childran with tobacco." The latter suggestion would be of little avail, if carried out, for the average boy supplies himself from his father's stock. Zhalandia Skating Rink.—On Saturday evening the rink at Temuka was w«ll patronised, the floor during part of the time being completely crowded. Tbe older hands are becoming quite proficient, and their success is a temptation to others to learn tbe graceful pastime of rinking. On Monday evening again there was a Urge attendance, and several of those present were able to exhibit some very pretty skating. It it to be regretted that some music cannot be provided. At Geraldine'the services of the brass band have been secured, and their playing adds much to the pleasure of all present, We understand that as soon asufficient number have acquired the art, a competition arid carnival will be arranged. The rink will be open in Geraldine to-night. [ Haumtbd Mb. [ A working m»n gays: " Debt, poverty, and suffering haunted me for years, caused by a iiok family and large bills for doctoring, whioh did no good.
