SKATING RINK.
The Zealandia Skating Sink Company, who opened at the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, last night, were very liberally patronised* In the early part of the evening only a few enterprising persons ventured upon the fl >or, the majority of visitors preferring to occupy seats upon the stage. As the evening wore on, however, the number of skaters increased, and by about eight o’clock the ball was well filled. With so many beginners there was bound to be a few tumbles, and occasionally someone or other would coma a regular “cropper.” Such disasters, however, far from eliciting sympathy, only provoked hearty laughter from the onlookers, and indeed the unhappy victims themselves seemed to look upon it as part of the “ fun of the thing.'’ Several gentlemen and young ladies were evidently quite proficient in the art, and their graceful movements elicited not only admiration, but provoked emulation—not always with the happiest results. It was certainly astonishing, however, to see in how short a time perfect novices became “at home ” on the wheels, and there are already signs that “rinkomania ” will get a strong hold upon Temuka. The management endeavored to arrange for the services of a bind, which would doubtless bare added to the enjoyment of the evening. They were, howevsr, unable to effect this. The Company desire to give ladies every opportunity of acquiring the graceful art, and they will therefore open the rink tn several days during the week when the charge w 11 be reduced, and proficient skaters will be in attendance to render instruction and assistance. Later on there will be exhibitions and competitions. Attention is drawn to an alteration in the dates upon which the rink will be op.ned in Temuka. Iq future the days will be Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. A rink will be open in Geraldine tonight.
