NO PLACE LIKE NEW ZEALAND.
Mr M’Langhtio, a farmer in ths north of Auckland, haa just returned from a visit to South America, where be has ■pent a year in travelling with the express object of taking up land and settling down. He has decided that, taken altogether, there ia no place like New Zea'and. He did not go to South America a« a stranger as he was boro there, and hia father lived there for aizty years, and he visited his native land with a strong predeliotion to ■tay there. He informs the New Zealand Herald that ha ia convinced ''New: Zealand is s far bitter place for an Englishman and there's more money to be made in it, and it’s easier kept when made. You never know when a civil war may break out in South America, or a war with a neighbouring republic. Chili, Bolivia, and Peru have not recovered from the last was, and a war between Chili and the Argentine must come sooner or later, as they dispute Patagonia between them. All these countries court war, and go ia when they have a chance. .They. love if, but the foreigners don’t, aa they generally haye.to pay for the fen. When I hear the people growl at the New Zealand Government, I. think they should just go to South America. They would at lea*t get an idea of what, corruption means. A man baa only to become a governor or judge and ha is rich, and all hie relatives and friends too. Most of their loans are spent in armies and navies. Chili alone can put 100,000 men in the field, well-armed and equipped, and better soldiers are not to be had. When on the march a flight of locusts are fools to them. All ia fish that drops in their net, and they don’t care a rap who it belongs to.” Mr McLaughlin gives a lot of ioformatioi about agricultural and pastoral affairs in the Argentine Republic and Chili, but considers New Zealand farmers better off, bad times and all.
