MURDEROUS ASSAULT.
Invercargill, Juno 19. This afternoon as Dr Galbraith u as passing along a street in North Invercargill, a passer-by saw a man named John Maloney, inspector of nuisances for the borough, following the doctor with a double-barrelled gun. The doctor turned and spoke to Maloney, but what passed between: them has not transpired. Maloney raised the gun and deliberately fired at him. Ur Galbraith was severely wounded in the thigh The leg from the hip to the knee was riddled with a heavy charge of shot. ’ He fell to the ground and Maloney walked away. Hr Galbraith was put into a trap and brought to his residence in town, where several of bis colleagues had assembled and attended to his injuries. Ur Galbraith is an elderly man, and is suffering from shock to "the system, The police went out to Maloney’s house, and found a gun with one barrel recently discharged, and the other loaded. His family said nothing of his whereabouts, but he was found in the backyard and arrested without, resistance. On the way to the lockup he talked incoherently. The outrage is auppdsed to he the outcome of an insane grudge against the medical profession. Ur Galbraith has had no dealings with Maloney for years, The latter suffers from chronic surgical, disease, and about five years ago he sued Ur Cotterill in toe Supreme, Court for damages for alleged maltreatment. The action broke down, and the question of Maloney’s sanity was afterwards raised, be having stated hp, ypuld. “ wing,,”, Ur Cotterill. Dr Galttrdith', 'wiiMptßeV medical men, declined to certify that -he was sane, and Maloney seems to have harbored a grudge against him and the otter doctors since.
