A telegram to hand yesterday from Christohuroh states that Mrs Harper, the wife of the Primate, died airly that morning, aged 82 years. Final Meeting. A. meeting of the members of' the late Waking Lodge, Winchester, United Ancient Order of Druids, takes place on Saturday evening to wind up the affairs of the Lodge.

The Mails. —Thu steamer Alameda, with the European mails to May 19, left San Francisco tor Auckland on June 3, three days late. The Mariposa, with the Colonial Mails to May, arrived at San Franciao from Auckland on June 9th, one day early. Cricket. —The match Australian Eleven against Cambridge University commenced on Thursday. The University team went first to the wickets, and their innings closed for 332. Oo Friday the first innings of the Australians closed for 266. The Englishmen in their second inntgs made 230. Cancelled License. At the annusl meeting of the Mackenzie Licensing Committee last week, the license held by Mr F. Daly for the Silverstream accommodation bouse was cancelled. Cue of the members of the Committee did not agree with the cancellation and resigned. Resident Magistrate's Court, Temuka. —Messrs J, Talbot and .1. Guild, J.P.’s, presided at a short sitting of this Court yesterday. Two maintenance cases—Gill v. Gill, and Henderson v. Henderson—were adjourned for a week. All the oiyil oases set down for hearing were settled out of Court.. Important Sale. —Attention is directed to the important sale of live and dead stock, household furn ture, • etc, on account of Mr P. fl. Barker, by the N.Z. Loan and M.A. Company in conjunction with Mr K, F. Gray. The cattle and sheep will be sold at Winchester Fair to-day, and the horses, harness, hay, and furn : ture at the homestead, Koran, to-morrow.
Erratum. —In our report, of the G ralditioTown Board meeting, on Thursday last, it was stated that in their letter to the Board Messrs Smithson, Raymond, and Wilson Smith requested the Board’s patronage. It should hive been stated that the firm mentioned above notified the dissolution of the firm of White, Snaith,son and Raymond, and the formation of the firm mentioned above. Alleged Attempt toMhrdek. —At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch, on Friday, Thomas and Patrick Henley were charged with shooting at Peter Sinclair, with intent to murder, on May 36th. A remand was granted till Wednesday, the police stating that Sinclair was unable to appear. The younuec prisoner was released on heavy bail. Biplb Shooting. — A rifle shooting match takes place at' Temuka on Thursday next between a team «f seven men from the Temuka Bifies and a similar number ef men from th# Geraldine Rifles. The following will represent Geraldine : Lieutemnt Ward, 001.-SergeaUtStonehouso, Sergeant Flemming;' Private J. McKenzie, Private P. McDonald, Bugler Stonehouae, Private H. Ohiverson. Emerg ncies D. Thb Saltation Aemt. —Mr Goldie interviewed the Minister of Public Work* on Saturday with a major of the, Salvation Army with the object of representing the claims of the Army 1 to a free railway pass for thsir Prison Brigade and Rescue branch. It was stated free pases were given in New South Wales, Victoria, and Sooth Australia, Tiotoria also .gives an annual grant of £SOO. Mr Mitchelsen asked the deputation to stats their claims m writing and he would submit them to the Cabinet.
Coursing. The United Canterbury Coursing Club’s first meeting concluded on Friday last 1 at Ashburton. The meeting lasted three days. The Canterbury Cup, for all aged dogs, Jt3o, fell to Mr R. J. Kerr’s f b Rhodanthe, with Mr T. Alexander’s bk w d Old Acquaintance runner up, £lO. The Ashburton Stakes, for puppies, £2O, was won by Mr A. Lee’s f b Yorkshire Lass, with Mr Chariot Meddon’s Lara runner up. The next meeting will be held near Timarn. Horses Km India. —AMegram received recently from Calcutta states that the Government there has reduced the purchasing price of horses landed in India from New Zealand. The reduction, at the present rate of exchange, is upwards of £7. A fine mob of 250 horses arrived at Wellington from stations along the West Coast, N.T., for shipment to Calcutta by the Tekapo, They were reported to be of a much superior class to those shipped south, and ware ; specially selected. : Foothill. —A full account of the football match, Timaru v. A Sbetiob Acknowledged.— Last month we reprinted a paragraph from a Nelson paper relating how Mr Curtis’s house was saved from burning by'the sagacity of a spaniel.' During the night a burning log fell on the kitchen floor. The dog noticing it went to Miss Curtis’s room, and aroused her, and returned to the kitchen. Finding she did not come, be returned and aroused her again. She rose and went to the kitchen, found the log smouldering, a big hole burnt in the floor, she immediately extinguished the fire. The New Zealand Insurance Company, with whoa, the house was insured for £IOO, have presented Miss Curtis with a gold bracelet, in a case, bearin» a suitable inscription, also the dog with a silver collar, with an inscription. ,
Near Enough.— Dsspits the laughter of members, Mr Kerr riterated the statement in the House on Friday night that there are rabbit factories and sheep factories in the Nelson province. Lktbi-s Licensing Committee. At the annual meeting of the Level* Licensing Committee on Saturday, renewals were granted to all holders of licenses in the district. The police report was good. Permission was granted to licensees to extinguish the light burning outside e.cb hotel at 10 o’clock, the closing hour. Licensees of two-storey hotels were informed that they must provide some simple form of fire escape.
