BOOK AGENTS.

TO THE EDITOR, . Sik,—l was surprised to see in your paper of Tuesday a subject revived' which was discussed and dropped months ago. Poor Mr Miller has had to send to America for a “slashing letter” from the pen of a “big brother,” and after a long interval, lo t one comes, very big indeed; with multiplicity of words and literary and personal references that have nothing to do with the matter in hand, except that it secures a cheap k advertiaement from the indulgent editor of the Temuka Leader. I never condemned book-reading or book-selling —no sensible man would—but ,1 did book-swindling ;andH;the cap fits anyone let him put it pa I J if the opinions I gave 'expression to' in the interest of certain, victimised individuals are so Insignificant as your correspondents represent, why; pray, do they make such a fuss about the matter t Is it to undertake the useless task of exposing sentiments that everybody; seel te be weak, ns they say, or is it with > thdm ae it was with Demetrius—the idol-maker of Ephesus because the craft is in danger?” Those specially interested themselves taking up the cudgels would seem to point in the ! latter direction. Who would expect it otherwise, especially if the missile hits the mark aimed at ? I hope the books sold by Messrs Dickerson and Co. are more logical than the letter with which they have favored Temuka and myself. Personalities fired from the other side of the Pacific will, of course, fall harmlessly here, and fail to servo the interests of any publishing ; firm or any newspaper that inserts them. Had it not occurred to me that some may have forgotten* th e position taken up by me, I should not have noticed this communication.— I am, etc., .1. Dicesox.
