The Southland Education Board resolve to protest against tho proposal of the Minister of Education to abolish Boards.
The representative of a public company doing business at Invercargill is said to have left town under circumstances not yet explained, He left a note in the office, 1 from the tenor of which it appears that something had occurred which had unsettled him. He is a single man, and it is rumored that he has had a rebuff from a young lady in another part of the colony. The police have been informed of the affair, but are reticent regarding it, At Auckland on Saturday a boy named Georg* Burgess, 10| year* of age, was charged with stealing a gold watch and chain, and setting fire to a whare at Swanson. He said he, could not help doing it. The R.M. isommented on the alarming increase of juvenile crime in Auckland, and sentenced the boy to receive six strokssjrom a birch rod, to be imprisoned in the police cells for 48 hours, and to be then sent to the Kohimanma training school until be reaches the age of 15 years. The annual meeting of the Auckland Fibre Company was adjourned for want of a quorum. The report shows that the debit balance balance has increased by £2809 5a 4d, ! the sura to debit on profit and loss account being £8321 I3a 2d. Ths Protection League at Dunedin has made a series of recommendations, including a duty 'ion boots and shoes at per pair; 25 per cent on turnery goods ; 5 per cent on preserved fruit; and 20 per cent on malleable castings, and all agricultural Machinery except reapers and binders; jewellery should be taxed the same as in Victoria; 30 per cent on pictures ; and 34 por cent on shirts, if shirtings and cotton goods are not admitted fres.
