COMMERCIAL.
ASHBURTON MARKETS. Mr E. G. Staveley, for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, reports on the Tinwald sale, 29ih inst., as follows : Owing to the broken weather very few slock yarded, and small attendance, the | entry comprising about 2000 sheep. The sale went off well, there being a good demand for likely sorts. Fat crossbred wethers made Jls 6d ; do ewes, 7a ; forward merino ewes, 3a 2d ; 2,4, and 6-tooth mixed crossbreds, 5s 41 to 5s lOd ; store merino wethers, 2s 4d; do ewes, Is Bd. • CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE. The Corn Exchange reports for the week ending Friday evening, the Ist inst. : Deliveries by rail have visibly fallen off, and now supplies have chiefly to be drawn from ex store parcels, The London market again shows a drooping tendency, but our local market is more influenced by the quantity ot spacb offering than any outside demand. The prices offering are not sufficient to induce holders to take from store. Intercolonial trade is especially slack, and tho Australian trade is almost at a standstill, the majority of potatoes are going forward on owners’ account, Wheat—Tuscan has had a good sale at 2s to 2s 9d, and large parcels ex store for special oiders would command a fraction more, Pearl is in good local demand at 2s 8d to 2s 9d. Hunters, however, which is offering far more plentifully than other lines is quiet at 2s 7£d, second quality is very dull at 2s 6d. Chicken wheat: Broken is offering plentifully at Is lOd to 2s. Oats Milling are firm at 2s to 2s Id ; short feed, Is 10J to Is lid ; hot b have good demand. Long descriptions are not offering in any great quantity, but are not specially inquired for.
Barley—Prime is still worth 4s 3d to 4s 4d, little, however, is offering ; medium quality has been changing bands at 8s 6d to 3s 9d, and inferior at 2s 6d ; feed ii quiet at Is 9d to 2s. Beans are dull at 2s 5d to 2s 6d, and Prussian blues are without change at 2s 6d to 2s 9d ; feed are moving off at 2s Sd to 2b 4d,
Grass seed is without change, ma-chine-dressed at 2s 6d to 2s 7d ; farmers’ parcels vary from Is 9d to 2s, Cocksfoot is not so brisk, although prices remain at 3£d to 3|d for bright dressed heavy seed, and 3d for ordinary samples. Potatoes remain at 20s at country stations. Dairy Produce—Butter, 8d has been given for prime. Cheese has only a moderate trade at 2|J to according to size and quality, The above prices are those paid to farmers and delivered f.0.b., Lyttelton, sacks extra. DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS. At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday the following business was transacted Fat Cattle—l 62 head yarded ; a few pens prime, the rest medium aud inferior. Best lots brought fully last week’s rates, but others were just a shade easier. There were no really prime heavy-weight cattle forward. Bullocks brought from £8 down to £4, cows from £6 10s to £2.
Fat Sheep—Only 1438 penned, inclusive of 60 merino wethers. The smallness of the supply, and the presence of buyers for export in the market, caused values to take a sharp rise, on an average probably not less than 2s a bead. Best crossbred wethers, and there were no special lots lots forward, brought from 13s to 13s 9d ; medium, 10s 6d to 11s 6d ; light, 9s to 10s ; best crossbred ewes brought from 11s to 12s 6d ; medium, 9s 6d to 10s 6f ; light, 8s to 9s ; merino wethers, from 6s 9d to Bs. Wright, Stephenson, and Co. sold for Mr William Grant (Ellonghton Grange), 124 crossbred ewes at from 12s to 9s 3d ; for Mr Andrew Grant (Willowbank), 81 crossbred ewes from 11 s 9d to 10s 6d. Fat Lambs—l2B penned, and sold at from 7a 6d to 88 3d, Pigs—A very large entry, but prices were well maintained. Extra heavy weights brought from 60s to 73s ; bacon pigs from 40s to 58s ; porkers, from 80s to 38s; stores, from 18s to 26s ; suckers, from 6s bd to 14s 6d. DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday : Wheal—There is no fresh feature of interest to report, and no change from
ast week’s weak demand, which coninues weaker if anything, We quote prime milling red straw, velvet, and tnscan, 3s Id to 3s 3d ; medium to good, 2s 6d to 3s ; inferior to medium, Is 6d to 2s 4d (ex store, sacks weighed in), terms, Oats—We quote prime milling, stout and bright, Is to Is 9d ; best short feed Is to Is ilanish, Is 6d to Is 7d ; inferior, Is 2d to Is 5d (ex store, sacks weighed in) net cash. Barley—We quote prime malting, 4s 8d to 4s 6d ; medium, 3s 9d to 4s ; feed and milling, Is 9d to 3s 9d (ex store, sacks per agreement), terms. Grass Seeds Values continue nominal, with very little inquiry for both ryegrass and cocksfoot —the former 2s to 3s, the latter 3£d to 3|d per lb. Potatoes Best Northerns, 45s to 50s. Chaff—Heavy, well-cut and riddled, 50s to 55s ; straw, 355. Carrots, 40s. Turnips, 17s 6d. Straw—Oaten and wheaten, 40s. Hay—Oaten, 60s ; clover and ryegrass, 60s. Butter—Prime salt, Bd, kegs extra j fresh do, 9d per lb. Cheese—Best Akaroa, 4d ; loaves, Hams and Bacon—Bd for former, 7d for rolls and flitches. Honey—3|d in tins and casks. Sheepskins—On Monday country dry crossbreds, inferior to medium, brought Is 2d to 3s 5d ; do do merino, Is to 2s 8d ; medium to full-woolled crossbreds, 3s 9d to 5s 5d ; do do merino, 2s 9d to 4s 9d ; dry pelts, 2d to Is ; butchers’ green ‘ crossbreds, best, 3s lOd to 3s 3d ; medium, 3s 2d to 2s 9d ; green merinos, Is 9d to 2s 2d ; lambskins, 4s 7d to 2s 2d. Hides—We quote heavy weights, free from scars and offal, to medium, 2|d to B£d ; light, to 2|d ; inferior and bulls’, to 2d per lb.
Tallow—Prime mutton, 19s to 20s ; medium to good, 16s to 18s ; inferior, 13s to 15s 6d ; rough fat—inferior, 7s 6d to 8s 6d ; medium to good, 9s to lls ; best mutton caul, 11s 6d to 13s per cwt, _____ AUSTRALIAN MARKETS.

Locally made butter, Is 3d to Is 9d. The aupp'y is decreasing. Best imported is in good demand at from Is to Is 3d. Cheese is in good demand at 7d to Bd. Bacon, 9d. Hams, Is to Is Id. Oats, heavy, 2s 3d; heavy feed, 2s to 2s 2d, market dull. New Zealand bran, lOJcl j market dull, there being large stocks. Pollard is quiet at lOd. Maize is plentiful at 2s 4d to 2s sd. Warrnambool potatoes, 45s to 47s 6d ; Circular Head, 66s sd; New Zealand potatoes, 55s to 60a. The supply is equal to the demand, which is steady. Wheat: Milling, 3sQdj chickwheat, 3a. London, May 29. Apples per Rimutaka sold at from 4s to 13s per case. Tin is quoted at £B6 ss. A wheat cargo by the barque Carl Burchard (Lyttelton, February 4th), sold at 32 6d. May 80, The wheat market shows a general decline of 6d. Continental is inactive. American quotations are unchanged.
