The cable steamer Sherrad Osborne has again returned to Wellington, j having, picked up two fractured portions lof the cable measuring eighteen miles, j It has been ascertained that, although the|portion of the cable recovered is in a few instances somewhat corroded, yet, as a whole, the wire is in good condition, and wijl it. is believed, last for some years to come. The overhauling operations will be completed in about three days, and this having been been accomplished, the cable will Ifo taken out and spliced to the buoyed end inearest Lyall Bay, and the remaining portion of the severed cable will then be grappled for. i
A young man named George Henning was charged at the Wellington R.M. Court wiih being a deserter from H.M.S, Nelson, while she was in Wellington in | March, 1887. After hearing evidence asj to' his arrest, Hia Worship committed accused to prison until one of Her Majescy[B ships comes to New Zealand, so that he can be put aboard her. The Hon. 3ir Harry Atkinson was on Tuesday evening installed as District Grand Master of the Wellington (North island) Grand Lodge of New Zealand, E.C. Upwards of five hundred freemasons were present from all parts 4 of the colony. O. J. Toxward, the retiring D.P.M., performed the installation ceremony, assisted by H. Thomson, D.G.M., Canterbury Lodge, E.C., and the members of the District Grand Lodge. The ceremony took place at the old Provincial Council Chamber, and concluded about 9 p.m. Sir Harry Atkinson promised to look into the subject of benevolence and visit every lodge in the. distriot. A masonic banquet was afterwards held at the Masonic Hall, Boulcott street. ;
A stable, hay-loft, and cart-shed at Papakurn Ya'ley, Auckland, the property of S. P. Decarteret, was burned pearly on Saturday morning. On looking pver the debris Mr Decarteretiound some human remains, consisting of a skull and other bones, so much charred that if any were lifted they fell to pieces. It is supposed that some trespasser went to sleep in the hay-loft, and accidentally caused the fire and perished in the flames. The building was insured for £4O in the South 1 British office.
A female inmate of the Auckland lunatic asylum named Mrs Green, in a sworn statement; has'made very serious charges against the management and the officials of the asylum. The substance of her statement is that site has been illtreated by some of the female attendants ; that they dressed themselves as ghosts to frighten her, and then locked her up in a oadded room, tolling her that they were going to an undertaker to order her coffin. Subsequently one of the attendants came to her to.make confession before the coffin came. She also complained that she was dragged by the hair to .the bathroom, aud when she refused to go they slapped, her on the face. Her complaints have been forwarded to the Government.
