The steamer Afghan will probably return to Melbourne to eudeavor to land he.' Chinese passengers. The owners of the vessels which have recently arrived from China, feel indisposed to go pn to Melbourne, but the Chinese passengers insist on being conveyed to their distinntion. May 26.
The Government have decided to enforce the section of the Chinese Restriction Act of 1881 which precludss vessels from bringing more than one Chinaman to every 100 tons under a penalty of £IOO a head, and shipowners are to bo 1 notified that such enactment will be enforced after

Preparatory to the departure of the Menmuir on Saturday, two of the Chinese escaped, notwithstanding precautions taken by the Customs, who refused to clear the vessel unless the number of passengers were accounted for and had paid the fine of £SO each and poll tax. After this had been complied with the vessel left, taking.3s back to Hong-Kong who were brought to the colony. London, May 24.
