The Sherard Osborne has succeeded in securing l the White’s Bay end of the cable, and buoying it. i

Sir Jas. Elector, New Zealand Commissioner at Melbourne Exhibition, left for Sydney on Monday by the steamer Wakatipu. A large quantity of antimony from Endeavor Intent arrived at Wellington on and some' portion of it jwill be shipped 1 to Melbourne to be exhibited at the Exhibiton. Four tons of quartz from the same mine were also brought oyer, and this has been broken up at the instance of the Directors of the Antimony Cbmpany in London, who are anxious that the stone should be properly tested in Londbn. A largely attended meeting was ! held at Dunedin on Monday evening to further the early closing movement. Resolutions were carried affirming the desirability of shortening the hours of retail business, and pledging the meeting to support Mr Joyce’s Shop Hours Bill by largely! signed petitions and other means. Substantial subscriptions were received to ! defray expenses, and it was suggested | that a monster public meeting be held. A miner, named McQuiggao, walking on the Kanieri tramway, near Hpkitika, going to work before daybreak on Monday, was blinded by a flash of lightnirig, and fell into the stream below. He sustained a compound fracture of the leg, and lay some time trying to attract attention, but failing this he crawled to the ‘nearest house, and was soon conveyed j to the Hospital. His sufferings were intense, the bone protruding, but these' were borne heroically.
