Information has been received from New Guinea that a volcanic eruption accompanied by a large waterspout, has been experienced in New Pomerania, situated in the German portion of the island.
The cricket match between Surrey and the Australians resulted in a win for the .latter by one innings and 148 runs. Surrey scored 89 and 126.

Mr Pritchard Morgan has stopped work at his gold mines in Wales, in consequence of the Government restraining him, by injunction of the Court, from removing the gold without permission of the Crown. The Earl of Carnarvon has given notice of his intention to ask Government whether they intend to restrict the entry of foreign cruisers into colonial harbors, The Morning Post, in referring to the subject, expresses the opinion that it is difficult to see how the demands of the colonies can be refused without danger of England becoming engaged in a conflict with them which may have serious results. Paris, May 16. The Chamber of Deputies have rejected the duty on Indian corn. May 17.
It is reported that the Premier will move for the expulsion of General Boulauger from the Chamber of Deputies.

It has been ascertained that all the stations in German New Guinea have turned out unprofitable, There is an impatient feeling in Germany and Austria at Russian intriguing in the Balkans, and German troops have been despatched to the frontier.

The Canadian Government are protesting against the reckless emigration of English paupers to Canada.

Arrived—-Mnnapoori, from the Bluff. The Wesleyan Conference effected a satisfactory compromise regarding the Tongan difficulty. The Rev. D. Moulton has agreed to retire, provided the Rev. Geo. Brown be appointed to succeed him in charge of the mission there. The Conference resolved to agree to the recommendation.
Owing to the recent splendid rains a great harvest is expected throughout the agricultural districts.

A scaffolding:, which was being erected at the Coffee Palace, fell with a tremendous crash to the pavement, linetaring the stall »f a boy, breaking a girl’s leg, and seriously, injuring two other parsons who were passing at the time. The workmen on the s ructure escaped uninjured. Sydney, May 16,
Sailed—Mariposa, for Auckland. McKee, the Railway Stationmaster at Hay, committed suicide to-day. It is slated that his accounts wore falsified, and that there are defalcations of about £IOOO.

A new reservoir at the gas works, holding 3.000,000 gallons of water, burst while being tested, The damage done will lake two monlbs to repair. No one was injured. Brisbane, May 17.
Two gold piospecting parties to New Guinea . have been sanctioned by the Commissioner.
Adelaide, May 16.
A. collision occurred last night between the steamers Gabo and Cowry. The latter was cut down to the water’s edge, and sank almost immediately. The Gabo was so badly injured that she had to be beached.
