FOOTBALL.
TIMARU ! F. WAIHI. On Saturday last a match was played in Timaru between teams representing the Waihi and Timaru Clubs. The teams were composed as follow:—Waihi (red and white): Back, A. Sballard; three, quarter-backs, C. Macintosh, J. P. Kalaugher, and J. A. Fitzgerald ; half, backs, T. Harte and W. Stewart; forwards, E. Mabin, W. Lewis, B. Wagstaff, H. N. fliskens, J. MoLeod, W. Brinkman, F. Shallard, A. Stewart, and W. Stewart. Timaru (dark blue and red): Back, H. McLean ; three-quarter-b&cks; I F. Fish, G. Wood, and A. 0. Perry; half-backs, G. Jones and E. Lough} forwards, Wrif Pearce, W. Perry, G. Matheson, Goodall, " Watkios, Goech, B. LeCreo, R. Msokay, and Kenny. In the first spell no score was made by either side, though Timaru had rather the best of it. In the second spell Waihi obtained a try and'a mark, but no goal resulted. Tituaru got a trjr, which W. Perry converted into a goal. Tne match thus resulted in a win for Tmuru by three pointe to one. Some first-rate play was shown, by .froth sides. The ground was veiy slippery. After the match the visitors were entertained by the Timaru team ht the Grosvenor Hotel) and left for home shortly before 10 o'clock, where they arrived safely shertly after midnight,
ENGLAND V. WELLINGTON. The match England v. Welliigton was played on the Basin reserveon Saturday in the presence of 6000 people. The weather was fine, and the ground was in good order, doßpite the rain of the morning. In the first speli: the Englishmen Hcored a goa, and io the second spell the Wellington team manag-sd ialsd jo secure ooe, the match thns resulting a draw. Neither side displayed particularly good form, persona who h«d seen the twe> previous bouthern matches being* of opinion that it was the worVt played match of the three. TEMUKA SCHOOL V. WINCHESTER SCHOOL. On Saturday last a match wis played at Winchester, between teams represent* ing the Terauka and WiueheaUr Public Schools, and resulted in a win.fpr thelemuka lads by 2 iries to nil.
WAIHI V. ASHBURTON. The football match, vVaihi v. Ashbnrton, arranged to be played at Geraldi»e on Thursday next, will, in alf probability, ba postponed to Saturday next on account of many of the local men being unable to get away on Thursday. The names of the Waihi team will appear in next issue.
A match is being arranged between thr Ternuka and Timaru Pirates Olob, and will probably take place on Thursday. If the Ternuka Club is to hold ita own this season marabera should go in for more ",;! pruotice. l TEIK CHINESE QUESTION. ' .

The captains of the steamers Tsinan and Afghan fearing that, if they attempt to take back the Chinese a serious outbreak will occur, hare determined not to risk their lives, and claim from Admiral Fairfax the protection of. the British flag. MKLBoireira:, May 14. _The captain of the steamer Albany, with Chinese passengers aboard, defied the Customs authorities and proceeded to the wharf at Melbourne. The passengers were not/however, allowed to land, and the captain will be proceeded against. Brisbane, May 14.
The Chinese of Kelvin Grove hart cabled to Pekin, asking the protection of the Imperial Government.
