HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Wednesday. Present— Messrs John Jackson (Chairman), Moore, Balfour, Barker, and Hayhurst, The Chairman reported that since last meeting several amounts had come in, including a cheque from Government for £1077 9a lOd. The amounts put the funds in credit, but a cheque had been drawn since, and that day the funds stood £]oß in debit. Tenders had been called for a new morgue, hut one had not been accepted, as they were all far above the estimate.
After a short discussion it was resolved on the motion of Mr Moore, seconded by Mr Hayhurst—“ 1 hat the morgue be built according to the proposed plan.’’ The following resolutions were carried : Proposed by Mr Moore, seconded by Mr Barker—“ That the monthly returns laid on the table show only those patients admitted to the hospital during the previous month, and the sums due lay them, and that the returns for tour previous months be also submitted to the meeliig, and that at each meeting the collector be instructed to tako proceedings against all of those who are iu a position to pay aod refuse to do so.”
Proposed by Mr Barker, seconded by Mr Moore—“ That tha monthly returns laid on the table of both hospital and charitable aid cases give names, the district from which they come, and whether paying or not paying ; that copies be forwarded to all public bodies paying rates to the board, requesting them to return the list after inserting information, remarks or suggestions, regarding individual cares opposite their names,” Mr Barker said he had amended this motion by leaving out all reference to “ publishing.” Mr Barker’s proposal—“ That applicants for medical or charitable aid free of cost must sign a declaration stating their inability to pay at present, and willingness to do so when able,” —was lost. Mr Barker said that he wished it to be known that he was not one of the parties who authorised that the ticket bearing the word “ pauper ” was to be put on certain beds on the hospital.—lt was found that there was no authority on the minutes for such a proceeding, and the hospital steward said it had been done in any case. Charitable aid cases were considered, and the boar'• ndi'inrnod.
