GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council took placa on Wednesday. Present—Messrs Balfour (Chairman), Hayhurst, Mackay, Moore, and Barker,
In his opening statement, speaking oE the Paraora bridge, the Chairman said the council’s engineers had snbmiltad a report to the joint committee, which was approved by the committee, recommending repairs to the extent of £6O, an addition of 80 feet ts the bridge, about £2OO, and protective works, £320. Nothing however could be done till the question of control was settled. With respect to the Suadown water supply, the necessary steps (o place the council in possession of land required would be completed in a month or five weeks, and the races ahou'd be completed by next summer. The Geraldine Road Board wrote asking if the Council would refund the cost (£57) of a footbridge ever the Kaknhu on the Upuha road if they built it.—Farther information as to locality to be asked for. The Mount Peel Road Board wroce asking that planks ha placed over the waterrace at the boundary road, as people were damaging the fences in getting over the race { also stating that they now proposed to erect a sheep bridge at a cost of about £2O over the race on the boundary road near Tripp’s cutting, if the council would grant £l6 towards the cost as compensation for damage done to the road. —It was agreed to vole the £l6 towards the bridge, this to cover also the cost of planks asked for, but it cannot be done till next meeting, as a former resolution has to be rescinded.
Mr G. G. Tripp wished to bo informed how much land the council intended to take for the waler-raoe through his land (outside the water district) so that he might convey it to the council.—The clerk was instrncted to inform Mr Tripp that the survey plans, etc., for a grant of casement, are in the lawjers’ hand, and that the price agreed upon was £ls an aero us compensation for land entered upon and right of entry. Estimates of tho receipts and expenditure of the Charitable Aid Board were received, the council’s contribution being £ll2O 16s 4d. In reference to a cheque for £lOl 7s 2d posted to the Temuka Koad Board which went astray, the chairman was authorised to consult the council’s solicitors as to whether he should issue a second cheque. It was agreed to cooperate with the Whangarei County Council in patitioniog the Government to amend the Public Works Act, ho as to cheapen and simplify the exchange of laud for roads.

The water is ti tyelling but slowly along the lower ruches of No. 3 contract in consequence of the ground being very loose and open i i places and of the absence of rain to hdp it. We think that some permanent • rraogemeot should be made for watching (i ad regulating the headwords of this >ys!em. Seadown district water sipply— Notice of intention to take land for the head work, under the provisions of the Public Works Act has again been sdrer* tiaed. Immediately the proclamation Is g azetted we shall be able to call (or ti nders. Woodbury district water supply —The survey for this work is ii: progress, and we hope to have tenders in for it by t ie Ju'y meeting of the council.” The repairs to the Opihi bridge were ordered to be attended to, and an estimate of the cost of cuttings into the river* bed to be furnished.
Mr Jas. Radford, clerk of works on the Rmgitata water races, reported several cases of waste of water by persona damming the races until the water overflowed.—lt was resolved that legal proceedings be taken against the parties complained of. Accounts to tbs amount of £448 8s 7d were passed for payment, and the meeting then adjourned.
